Bank of Salone governor, others to speak Growth Week 2011

As top policy-makers and researchers from Africa and South Asia meet leading Western experts to debate the latest ideas for stimulating economic growth in developing countries next week, Bank of Sierra Leone Governor, Sheku Sesay, has been confirmed one of the speakers at the conference.

 

Hosted by the International Growth Centre, government ministers, central bank governors and other senior policy officials from Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Liberia, Pakistan, Rwanda, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia will meet to discuss a range of key growth issues at the Growth Week 2011 slated for between Monday 19 and Wednesday 21 September at the London School of Economics.

 

Issues to be discussed include fragile states: rebuilding effective institutions after civil conflict; creating jobs and new enterprises in Africa; the future of cities in developing countries; Bihar: transformation to a developed state by 2015?; and harnessing natural resource discoveries for development.

 

Also expected to speak at the event are the Chief Economist, National Bank of Ethiopia, Yohannes Ayalew; Professor Abhijit Banerjee (MIT); Professor Tim Besley (London School of Economics); Professor Paul Collier (Oxford University); and President, General Central Statistical Agency o Afghanistan, Abdul Rahman Ghafooori.

Others are Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India, Subir Gokarn; Qazi Masood, Chief Economist, Government of Sindh; Sushil Kumar Modi, Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar; Professor Maurice Obstfeld, University of California, Berkeley; Yvonne Quansah, Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Ghana; Professor Tony Venables, Oxford University; and Economic Adviser to the President of Liberia, Erik Werker.
