Samoa Clinch JRWT Title
Samoa under 20 successfully achieved its mission as set out from the beginning – and that is to “win” this year’s IRB Junior Rugby World Trophy Tournament. In a very closely fought enthralling final between Samoa and Japan, Samoa’s Under 20 defeated Japan 31-24 , not only to claim title but their ticket to rejoin the 2012 IRB Junior Rugby World Cup 2012 in Cape Town South Africa.Reports from IRB.com website says the Japanese team dominated the first quarter of the game, 17-0 against the Samoans:-

IRB.com   “Samoa defeated Japan 31-24 to claim the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy 2011 crown and with it, qualification to the IRB Junior World Championship 2012 in South Africa.
Samoa full back Peter Schuster’s try deep into added time proved the difference in an enthralling final that Japan had led 17-0 midway through the first half.

Georgia beat a spirited Uruguayan team 20-15 to take third place and confirm the growth of the game in this country. The legacy in Georgia is huge as eight matches were shown live across the four match days of the tournament. The standard of play was high and the style attractive, ensuring that the sustained growth of the game in this country has received a new push.

Canada took fifth place beating Russia 49-24 and USA seventh by defeating Zimbabwe 30-29.

Samoa 31 – Japan 24

The Japanese were in early control and took a 17-point lead in the first quarter with two very neat tries. They took the game to the Samoans who were perhaps surprised by their commitment. The first try was simply executed: from the back of a scrum, number 8 Olive Taufa popped the ball to scrum half Keisuke Uchida, whose lovely long pass found wing Masakatasu Hikosaka. Hisoka cut outside one defender and inside another to touch down.

The second arrived after a lineout drive with hooker Yoshikatsu Hikosaka diving at the feet of the Samoans who were unable to stop him. When fly half Ryodo Nakamura kicked a penalty to extend Japan’s lead to 17-0, it was hard to see how the Samoans could find a way back. They did it with their usual style, attacking from broken play and soon generating holes that they exploited.

Japan and Samoa one step from JWC

 IRB.com

Eighty minutes stand between Japan and Samoa and their ticket to next year’s IRB Junior World Championship.   When these two proud teams take to the pitch for the final of what has already been considered the best IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy to date, winning will not only be about the glory but also what they leave behind for the next generation of Under 20s.

Samoa and Japan are the only two unbeaten teams in the tournament and worthy finalists. The Pacific Islanders made it clear from the moment they arrived in the Georgian capital what their intentions were. They are not alone in targeting the title, Japan lost last year’s Trophy final to Italy and themselves want to go one step further in 2011 before what is expected to be a full house at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi.

“We have made our preparations and now must wait for kick-off. We are confident we can beat Samoa with our game plan,” said coach Yukio Motoki, whose tactical approach to a must-win match with Georgia last time out was proof of their intent. “We tackle very low and that is hard for some teams. We are hoping it will work against Samoa.”

Japan's extra motivation

Motoki, a veteran of 79 caps and four Rugby World Cups, knows that a win would be very good for his country that is still coming to terms with the devastation following the earthquake and tsunami which hit Japan in March. “If we can show with courage and hard work what we can achieve, it would be a good message for my country in the aftermath of what has happened to us recently.”

The team not only has that to play for. Team manager Yasuhiro Iijima is living proof of the commitment of the Japanese team to the JWRT cause, his wife having given birth to their first child hours before their game against Georgia.
Captain Keisuke Uchida was a replacement in the 36-7 loss to Italy in Russia last year. With his knee strapped with ice, he smiled to the manager and added: “We are delighted to play for his daughter.

“This is the game we have been working for and want to play. As a player this tournament has been an important step in my career. I want to go on to play for my country at full test level.”
Across the Mtkvari River, the Samoan squad welcomed local Union officials, tournament staff, hotel employees and media to a song and dance reception. The passion with which they shared their culture gave an inkling of how important being Samoan is to them.
