Gerard Way was born April 9, 1977 in Summit New Jersey. Ever active in plays, music, and art programs in school growing up, Gerard has always been heavily active in creative pursuits. Heavily influenced by his grandmother, Elena, to further pursue the arts, Gerard had his first job in high school at a comic book store, and ended up getting his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1999 with the intention of building a career in the comic-book industry.
Inspired by the September 11 attacks on New York, and an intern at the Cartoon Network at the time, Gerard was inspired to put his emotions into lyrics and begin assembling the band that we now know as My Chemical Romance. Now, 4 record-breaking albums later, Gerard takes on lyrics and vocals for the band’s music, and influences much of the visual concepts of each album, music video, and tour. One of his favorite things from working on the ‘Danger Days’ album was being involved in the costume design of the Killjoys and the evil corporate goons at Better Living Industries.
In 2007 Gerard began writing and illustrating the award-winning comic-book miniseries “Umbrella Academy.” He frequently partners with illustrators Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba, Becky Cloonan, and Vasilis Lolos. His latest comic series is “The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.” Gerard travels with two sketchpads, pencils and pens, and makes it a priority to draw every day.
