Italy: Underwater earthquake shakes southern islands
Messina, 22 Nov. (AKI) - An underwater earthquake on Monday struck close to Italy's southern Aeolian islands off the north coast of Sicily. The magnitude 3 tremor's epicentre was 11.1 kilometres beneath the seabed, off the coast of the island of Salina.
Local residents felt the tremor but there were no reports of casualties or damage.
The Aeolian Islands, a UNESCO world heritage site, are a popular tourist destination in the summer months.
They attract up to 200,000 visitors annually, including the super rich, who sail around the islands aboard their yachts.
Many politicians and other wealthy Italians have houses on the islands
In August, a magnitude 4.6 undersea earthquake struck 6 km off Lipari, the volcanic archipelago's largest island.
The latest quake, which caused rocks to tumble down a cliff onto a crowded beach, shocking holidaymakers and slightly injuring several people.
