Cheese Panels & Other Heresies
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Just me on Friday, October 07, 2011
Simcha Fisher has another let’s-laugh-at-ourselves classic up.
Her specific problems are a little different than mine.
Where she frets about her youngest kids’ formation, I periodically have to admit to my eldest, “Yes, I’m sorry, you were the guinea pig, and the younger kids have different rules based on what you’ve taught us.”
But we both have kids who mess up the lyrics to hymns, not always deliberately.
She once caught the little Fishers singing “Make me a panel of your cheese.”
I once giggled my way through Mass when I realized my little boy was belting his heart out to a Psalm not found in any Bible:
“The Lord is kinda merciful.”
Surely you must have contributions to a Not-Deliberately-Heretical Childhood Hymnal? Share!
Buried by Toys

Lately, I’ve been pondering the Toy Problem.
I try to begin by rolling my eyes at myself. We’re so fortunate that our problem is an excess of stuff, when we could be having to worry about feeding or clothing or housing our family. The Too Many Toys problem is not a Problem in the real sense.
But still, we have MANY toys. The playroom is full enough that the kids rarely play in there. Most of our once... READ MORE
It's the Simple Things
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Wednesday, September 14, 2011
My babies are mesmerized by it. My big kids love to drag it around. It’s fun and it’s pretty, and just when we parents might be starting to get tired of it, it’s time to throw it away.
This miracle toy? A simple helium balloon.
We discovered the appeal of a balloon when we got one as a treat for Camilla during Blaise’s babyhood. He was a few months old and he couldn’t take his eyes off it. For weeks,... READ MORE
Happy Mothers

“Motherhood is not my highest calling,” says blogger Elizabeth Esther.
That provocative headline got my attention, and so did the premise that misplaced idealism regarding motherhood is ruining it for everybody:
This incredible weight of expectation places an almost impossible burden on mothers and non-mothers alike.
When we artificially inflate the importance of motherhood, then average, everyday,... READ MORE
New Missal Resource for Catholic Kids
Posted by Danielle Bean in Faith on Monday, August 29, 2011
Have you read Daria’s article about the upcoming changes to the language we use in the Mass? If you read all the way to the end, you will see that we grown ups have many resources for learning more about these changes and preparing for them.
But how can we best prepare our children for changes in the Mass? A great book to use is The Mass Explained for Kids (scroll down), upcoming from Pauline Books.... READ MORE
Show Off Your Family & Your Kids' Art Work
Posted by Danielle Bean in News on Sunday, August 07, 2011
We are collecting submissions of two different kinds for the Family Page in Faith & Family magazine.
1. Family Photos Send us a photo of your whole family and you might just find your lovely selves published in Faith & Family. If we use your photo, we will ask for your names, as well as a few other details about your family to share with readers.
2. Kids’ Art Work We’d love to show off your kids’ drawings. Have them create a masterpiece featuring a theme from the liturgical year. For this fall issue, please send us drawings of autumn feast days or saints whose feast days we celebrate in fall (the archangels, St. Therese, St. Francis, etc.)
For both kinds of submissions, please scan your image .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). I am looking forward to your fabulous photos and beautiful drawings!
Panda To Me

Can you stand another movie post this week?
This time I’m soliciting your advice.
Is there a kid movie this summer that’s worth forking over the outrageous fortunes it now takes to see a flick in a theater?
I’m asking specifically about Cars 2 and whichever Kung-Fu Panda this is, but if there’s something else meritorious, please steer me towards it.
Every parent has his own take on what is and... READ MORE
First World Problems
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Family on Friday, July 01, 2011
Are you aware of the twitter hashtag “#firstworldproblem” ?
It catalogs complaints from people who don’t actually have anything to complain about.
Not that I accuse any of our perfect children of having the out-of-control sense of entitlement being mocked here, and I know many of us do not share this lifestyle…
but Rachel’s post on boredom made me think of it.
Warning: one minor vulgarity.

Mom, I'm Bored!
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Thursday, June 30, 2011
Let’s have a little contest called “Mothers Helping Mothers.”
It goes like this. I say, “Mom I’m Bored,” and you give one or two of your favorite responses to that statement.
Of course, practically speaking I think it’s up to the child to figure out how to entertain himself. As my mother always told us, “I’m not a cruise director!” Kids are smart. They can find things to do.
But it’s also nice, at... READ MORE
Choosing Favorites

I have noticed something lately, a funny little detail about being a mom and running the show and making lots of choices. Here it is: when it comes to making decisions, I choose what I like best.
That probably sounds like a no brainer, but it has occurred to me lately that I might be inadvertently training my children to have the same yens as me. When I reach for the yogurt at the grocery store, I... READ MORE
