Inside History

A view of the funnel and bridge area of the destroyer HMS Onslow, showing damage sustained at the Battle of the Barents Sea. A more fortunate ship than the Achates, Onslow engaged the Admiral Hipper directly and in doing so lost 17 of her crew to enemy fire. Among those wounded was her commander, Captain Sherbrooke. Although designed to be able to engage in surface combat, destroyers were poorly armoured relative to larger vessels, and many crew positions were either dangerously exposed or protected by very thin plating. Hits such as the one on her funnel generated a hail of splinters which could prove just as dangerous as the projectile which caused them, and the numerous holes in the after end of the bridge are testimony to their lethality. Surprisingly, given its proximity to the point of impact, the multi-barrelled 'pom-pom' anti-aircraft mounting appears to be undamaged.
