Battlefield 3 vs. Modern Warfare 3: Which Will You Choose?

August 8th, 2011 at 4:45 pm · 21 Comments

The GameStop employee looks at me with a blank stare as I ask him which of these two fall shooters to preorder. Of course I already know the answer, but I like to mess with GameStop employees after they try to sell me their membership card.

“Well let’s see, have you played either of the earlier ones like Modern Warfare 2 or Battlefield 2?,” he asks in a tone that shows his irritation with me not being as up-to-date and hip with video games as he is. “Of course I have!,” I blurted out. He then goes on to list stuff off about Infinity Ward and something else about a Frostbite engine 2. At that point I am thinking about what I plan to eat for lunch.

I agree that graphics and a polished production are important to a certain extent. Both game engines are state of the art, so we can be sure that they will look and sound amazing. In addition, budgets are larger than ever, so we can we expect top marketing and voice talent will be utilized. However, these things are not driving my purchase decision. People like myself  who have played both series understand the differences in graphics and gameplay, so why should we even compare the two?

Listed below are some of the concepts I am considering when making my purchase and I would love to hear your opinions:

  • Does your past experience with these franchises dictate your future purchases?
  • Will the single player campaign or story factor into which one you will play?
  • Are you a competitive player or do you prefer co-op play modes?
  • Do you plan purchase and play both, or rent one of them?
  • Can you see yourself purchasing DLC in the months to come on either game?

As you can see, there are other factors besides graphics and marketing that drive us to play games. In the end, the sales numbers will show how gamers voted with their wallets, and one will ultimately secure a larger following. As we move closer to those dates, I look forward to reading your feedback and opinions.

Oh and by the way, I ultimately chose to eat a burrito for lunch that day after I preordered both games.

Both because they each offer something different.

MW3 if I want to kick ass alone.

BF3 if I want a more coordinated MP experience.

BF3 and MW3 are both triple A titles and both devs have been very frank that they are doing everything they can think of multiplayer wise to make the games great. They’re both going to be good the only reason you shouldn’t get both is if you personally hate one or don’t have the money.

Im gonna get London riot 2011 insted

It depends for me. To be honest, if BF3 isn’t gonna be on Steam, then I probably won’t get it for PC (which is a shame, but I don’t want to have to deal with EA Origin), so I’ll most likely get it for the PS3, which means I won’t be getting 64v64 online games :( . So long story short, I’ll be getting BF3

Why limit yourself to one or the other?

  • Cronstintein says:

I prefer the slightly deeper and more varied experience from the Battlefield series.
I also don’t like Activision very much so if somehow MW3 was actually new in some way that made it appealing I would buy it used.
In comparison, DICE don’t seem to be constantly trying to nickel and dime me. So I would return the respect and buy their game new.
The Origins thing is a bummer, but I’m sure a game that big will have box copies widely available.

Battlefield 3. It’s as simple as that. A modern shooter that plays to the strengths of the PC? Count me in with bells on.

I don’t understand the dislike of certain publishers. Why?

I already know I will end up with both but I think in the end Battlefield 3 will win out! Its not till recently I’ve stopped playing Bad Company 2 but I was bored long ago with Modern Warfare 2 and hell Black Ops did not even last me a week.

I just feel the Battlefield franchise is more fun with the bigger maps and the vehicles! I mainly get the Call of Duty franchise for the SP/Co-Op now.

  • Doc says:

I will play both. But the social network Activision is building around Call of Duty, while at first glance not appealing to me, now has me very intrigued.

Ive neveracrully played a batelfield game but i like rhe idea of teamwork over the one man army stuff in mw.

That beign said ill probally get both because i loved the origunal mw campain and the second one had its cool moments (still prefer the first) so ill prob pick up mw3 for the canpaign

Battlefield 3. I’ve been playing it since it launched and still have ass loads of fun with it. The best thing about it is that i dont have to start doing stupid shit like spinning around then killing someone in order to have fun with it.

  • Vallah4 says:

Battlefiels 3 because it’s out first and has more incetives to buy it new. I still plan on renting MW3 but unless they have a remote control UAV in the Prestige Edition then I would send it back after the month of enjoyment I get out of it like the last. Not to complain either because I got my Prestige MW2 at midnight and played the entire campaign start to finish that night!

I am looking forward to BF3 MP and MW3 SP. I can imagine the MW3 MP will be hacked/glitched/flawed.

    Useless article!

  • Awoll SGF says:

I think I’m going to be sitting with my thumb up my ass when both of these games come out.

    I’ve had it with FPS.

  • DoubleD says:

    I’m buying BF3 and BF3 alone. Why?

Here are hours spent playing each series over the past few years.

    Modern Warfare = 100+
    Modern Warfare 2 = 70 or so
Black Ops = less than 40

    It’s a downward trend.

    Battlefield 2 = 30 or so
Bad Company = 50 or so
    Bad Company 2 = 80 or so

    It’s an upward trend.

I don’t want to play the game that I’ve clearly gotten sick of over the years, rather the game that has drawn me in more and more with each release.

  • Jackson says:

Battlefield Bad Comp. 2, I was sick of it after I unlocked everything, but in modern warfare 2 I have 23 days 4 hours and 56 minuets played, about the same for Cod 4. I LOVED BC2 while I still had something to work towards, but if battlefield 3′s online game progression doesn’t top the last one, I think MW3 will win

  • madtownJOE2 says:

BF3 because i own MW2 which is pretty much the looks pretty much the same as mw2 plus i gotta leave room for Uncharted 3 Infamous 2 and fallout new Vegas if they come out with a game of the year pack or something plus burnout paradise $8 on psn right now so yah im going to be too fucking bussy to get a game thats the same online as the one i already own. Black Ops sucked

  • Bcarraway says:

I know this is the non-l33t response, but I’ll preorder MW3, and keep my eye on BF3. Sorry, but after the horrible online experience I had with EA’s other big FPS release this year (Crysis 2), I will approach any online MP game from EA with caution. It doesn’t help that the Bad Company 2 official console forums are still filled with complaints about connection problems.

If I was a PC gamer, then it might be a different story.

  • RYO ANGUS says:

Well i have played both bfbc2 and cod mw2..this time as i don’t have enough money, im going for only 1 game.. that would be battlefield 3
