A Metascore of 75 or higher denotes generally positive reviews, while 90 or higher indicates universal acclaim. Scores are not calculated for games with fewer than four reviews.

Below, we take a closer look at each of the past month's best new games. (Note that all game summaries are from the publishers' official descriptions.) Don't forget that you can now get updated critic and user reviews for these and all iOS games in Metacritic's iPhone/iPad section.

Yes, it's another tower defense game, but strong graphics and moveable towers separate it from the pack.

From the Publisher: Gem-crazed monsters are on the loose, and it's up to you and your legendary skills to blast them away in this unparalleled tower defense game, Gem Keeper. With 14 unique towers and 30 thrill-powered stages, Gem Keeper challenges your gamer skills to the max. Scheme, strategize, and dare to achieve the ultimate 'Perfect Clear'. The game doesn't end there – compete against your friends (and the world) in Endless Mode, and show them who's number one.

For a newcomer to tower defense games, Gem Keepers is the perfect place to start. For those who already love the genre, Gem Keepers is a no-brainer. Get it.
90AppSafari
Worth the money, trust me. Designed for both the iPhone and iPad , Gem Keeper has the potential to provide hours of fun.
90TouchArcade
Simply a stunner in both execution and gameplay, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
80AppSpy
It's great to see a powerhouse like NCsoft taking the plunge in to the App Store, but Gem Keeper feels like a safe gamble with the moveable tower system not really being explored.

Mage Gauntlet  iPhone iPod Touch iPad

Metascore (out of 100):

Action-RPG, $2.99, ages 9+

This new action-RPG written specifically for iOS impresses with its polished design and should delight fans of similar Nintendo classics.

From the Publisher: Mage Gauntlet is a classic-style action-RPG, designed from the ground up for iOS. It's inspired primarily by 90's action RPGs for the Super Nintendo, such as Legend of Zelda: LTTP and Secret of Mana. We wanted to make a fast-paced RPG that doesn't waste your time with fetch quests. Fight and explore your way through a humorous storyline about eccentric wizards, powerful artifacts, and dangerous monsters. Find items to customize your character's strengths and weaknesses. Enjoy smooth, responsive controls and fast, satisfying combat. When you beat the game, unlock a remixed Master Mode with overwhelming enemy numbers and new secrets to uncover.

What the Critics Said

100AppSpy
Mage Gauntlet is the kind of Action-RPG we've been waiting for on the iOS - a combination of intuitive controls suited to iDevices; fast-paced action split in to bite-sized chunks; and plenty of meaningful unlockable features makes it perfect for gamers on the go.
100Slide to Play
If you fondly remember the days of 16-bit action RPGs, then it doesn't get much better than Mage Gauntlet. In fact, gaming doesn't get much better.
100TouchArcade
So seriously, go download Mage Gauntlet. The time you spent reading this review could've been much better spent playing this incredible game.
90Gamezebo
Small quibbles aside, Mage Gauntlet proves itself to be a charming, action-packed, ultra-addictive title that should satisfy any 16-bit gamer. With 42 levels to complete, and then a Master Mode after that, this is a game that will keep you busy for quite some time. Luckily, thanks to some smart design choices, you're never more than a tap away from the action.
90TouchGen
Mage Gauntlet is great fun from the first level to the last, and then you can do it all over again, albeit harder.
80148Apps
From the difficulty to the combat, to even just the way the game feels like it was yanked straight out of a SNES, there is a lot to love here.
80AppSafari
The game runs pretty smooth with few hiccups. Mage Gauntlet's iPhone is likely to perform better on the iPhone 4S with its faster processor than on the iPod touch.
80AppSmile
A departure from the rope-swinging titles that Rocketcat is best known for, Mage Gauntlet retains the same graphic style and polished gameplay that we've come to expect, making this a compelling pick-up.
80Pocket Gamer UK
Simple but well-tuned fighting gameplay, combined with some great humour, make Mage Gauntlet worth conjuring onto your iPhone.
75IGN
The indie team at Rocketcat has created a polished and gratifying love letter to the 90s action RPGs of yesteryear. It's a lot of fun, but its best played in short bursts, to prevent the experience from feeling too repetitive.

Authenticity was always FIFA's strong hand. Now that the gameplay is world class too, this is the most realistic footy sim available, by a mile.
90AppGamer
While the lack of multiplayer is disappointing, FIFA 12 is still an impressive game in its own right. The updates from last year and attention to detail make this THE Football game on iOS.
90AppSmile
Featuring beautiful graphics, realistic animations, and improved controls, FIFA 12 is the first serious contender to challenge First Touch Soccer for iOS football supremacy.
90Pocket Gamer UK
Raising the game in terms of its slick and sleek delivery, FIFA 12 stands up to its big billing on the pitch, serving as EA's ultimate attempt on goal to date.
90TouchGen
A fabulous football simulation that stops just shy of full marks.
85Vandal Online
A very good football game that has a great manager mode as its main new feature. As a football simulator, it is also great.
80AppSpy
It's FIFA. While the controls have been streamlined and a robust manager mode has been added, whether you drop the money on this year's release comes down to how big a fan of the series you are.
80Gamezebo
FIFA 12 goes a long way towards proving me wrong, providing a genuinely compelling gameplay experience and presentation that, while not up to the same standard as its console brethren, does a very good job regardless. FIFA 12 is a nice way to get your FIFA fix on the go.
70148Apps
This game is best served for the soccer faithful who wants a deep game on the go, more than just the casual player looking for a quick game on the go.

Terrific fun that mixes classic Worms game play with golf, resulting in a hilarious and creative little game.
90148Apps
Worms Crazy Golf is an all-in-one entertainment pack that includes exciting gameplay, exploding worms and some very difficult obstacles to overcome on the way to a hole in one. This game is fun for golfers and non-golfers who don't mind adding a few strokes onto their game to explore the course and unlock a few surprises.
90Gamezebo
Worms Crazy Golf is, literally, a blast. It's a great spin (pun intended) on both artillery and golf titles, blending both genres together to create something that's new and different.
90IGN
Worms Crazy Golf is a super blend of puzzler and strategy game wrapped up in easy-to-understand golf-themed packaging. Whether you're a Worms fan or not will have no bearing on how much you enjoy this quirky, innovative offering.
80AppSmile
Eschewing weapons for clubs, Worms Crazy Golf features a quirky golfing experience using many of the familiar Worms elements.
80AppSpy
For a title that many would have never thought possible, Worms Crazy Golf is not only a fun golf game, but adding the charm of Worms to it, along with all the obstacles, bonuses, and utilities, makes for a really fun gameplay experience.
80Pocket Gamer UK
A remarkably generous offering from Team17. Fun, playable, and stuffed to bursting point with content.
70TouchArcade
The course design changes enough that you'll likely never get bored and the puzzling aspects make for an entertaining experience -- it's just too bad the golf part of it seems to be getting in the way of what has always made Worms interesting -- screwing around and aimlessly taking the chaotic approach.

What the Critics Said

100Gamezebo
In fact, in all regards Scribblenauts feels wonderfully natural on the iPhone. Not only does Remix make appropriate use of the keyboard, but they've made controlling Maxwell feel less clunky, cut out the weaker puzzles, and delivered it all at an iOS gamer friendly price.
100Modojo
Charming, intuitive and highly entertaining, Scribblenauts Remix is without question one of the best games the App Store has to offer.
100TouchArcade
A rock-solid pseudo-port that plays extremely well on mobile and displays a measure of technical and mechanical grace none of us expected it to. Oh, and it's Universal and supports iCloud saves across devices -- icing on the cake, folks.
90148Apps
It's what I've always wanted on iOS. There just needs to be more here! This is a wonderful start.
90AppSafari
The controls work well, probably because the previous releases were also touch-screen based, so the developer has the experience, and didn't need to completely change the control scheme.
90IGN
Scribbenauts veterans will lament the lack of new content in Remix, but it's impossible to complain too vigorously when the interface and presentation is so pitch-perfect. This is the definitive Scribblenauts experience. I can't wait for fresh level packs.
85Vandal Online
A great adaptation that arrives at a somewhat high price, which only has a problem in its localization. At this time, it is only in English.
80AppSpy
The true value of Scribblenauts Remix lies in the ability to mess around with the spawning system to create unique solutions; once the novelty wears out it's a short trip to the end of the game.
75Slide to Play
Scribblenauts Remix is a great mobile version of the DS games but won't whet the appetite of returning fans.
70Pocket Gamer UK
It's one of the most creative and ambitious ideas to hit the world of games, but being able to magic up a fire-breathing giraffe counts for little when the included puzzles are often so cryptic and dull.
70TouchGen
Scribblenauts may be worth buying simply for the sandbox mode, which works as a great time sink if you're bored on the go or waiting in line somewhere. As far as the game itself goes, don't expect to be challenged much, or pushed to solve puzzles in truly creative ways.
63Multiplayer.it
Scribblenauts Remix is fresh, original and it's got a huge potential, but it fails to deliver. You can create almost everything and that's funny, but the puzzles are often obscure or dull and there's nothing else to keep you entertained.

What the Critics Said

100AppSpy
While Modern Combat 3 doesn't feel anywhere near as revolutionary as the previous title, it still manages to up the ante with an exciting campaign and online multiplayer that's compelling enough to keep coming back for more.
100Slide to Play
Buy Modern Combat 3 for the multiplayer mode, not the by-the-numbers campaign.
90148Apps
Modern Combat 3 looks great, no question, but it's the smaller details like animations and the occasional slow-motion kill shot that really draw the eye.
90Gamereactor Denmark
Gameloft takes their Modern Warfare-clone and improves on everything. A good singleplayer campaign complements the awesome multiplayer mode. Lots of perks, killstreaks and great variety in the maps (which this time around are much larger end better designed). This is truly Gameloft's finest game yet, and the best shooter on iOS!
90Multiplayer.it
With better graphics, a more compelling campaign and a tremendous multiplayer, Modern Combat 3 is definitely the best FPS on App Store.
90TouchArcade
If you want to play first person shooters on your iOS device, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation is a must-buy game, so start making room for it.
90TouchGen
Thanks to Modern Combat 3's fantastic multiplayer, not only will I be able to reclaim my right as a gamer to blow people up at 3 in the morning, but because we're now in an era where this is all possible on my phone, any location in the world is open to me and my underpants.
85IGN
A huge, intense, and polished shooter. Modern Combat 3 is the best FPS on mobile devices, especially if you're a multiplayer-minded gamer.
80Modojo
Suffers from the same problems that plague many 3D mobile games, but its drool worthy graphics, enjoyable firefights and wealth of multiplayer options make it an obvious favorite, as well as a welcome addition to any virtual warrior's digital library. Oorah.
70Pocket Gamer UK
Modern Combat 3 is the best attempt at recreating Call of Duty on mobiles so far, but it still has a long way to go when it comes to the finer points of the FPS genre.
60Gamezebo
An unfortunately mixed bag. It looks and sounds great, but the writing seems haphazard, the gameplay feels clunky at best (and buggy at worst) and its online reliability is sporadic.

100AppSmile
An exceptionally polished action-arcade title, Bike Baron mixes precision controls with fun physics for a highly-engaging experience.
100AppSpy
Although some may get hung up on comparisons to relatively recent titles, stunt driving has been a staple on the App Store and Bike Baron is one of the best, sporting rock solid controls; difficulty scaling from easy to ludicrous; and community shareable levels for near endless content.
90148Apps
An exciting and addictive bike game. Clever gameplay, fluid graphics and challenging levels make Bike Baron an instant classic.
90Gamezebo
In a sense, Bike Baron lacks originality. But when it comes to the outstanding level design, high visual polish, and uniqueness in being the only great game of its kind on the App Store, it's hard to criticize the developers for being influenced by some great games and wanting to perfect that formula for a different platform.
80IGN
Bike Baron is frustratingly difficult, but in the best possible way - it never crosses that fine line between "hard" and "unfair." It's the best Trials HD clone to hit iOS.
80Modojo
Bike Baron may not be the most original of games, but who cares? This super tough app packs just the right amount of value into a small 37.4 MB package, and with possible updates on the way, you should definitely hop on this ride.
80Pocket Gamer UK
It owes much to Trials HD, but Bike Baron is one of the most addictive iOS games around.
80TouchArcade
Difficulty aside, the only serious issue I've had with Bike Baron is the lack of a quick level reset.

A shooter with no shooting but plenty of strategy, FlipShip uses tilt controls that should be familiar to fans of games like Tilt to Live.

From the Publisher: ByteSize Games is proud to present FlipShip, the addictive space-based action game where one tap is all you need to turn the tables and score big. In FlipShip, your goal is deceptively simple: tilt your device to move towards enemies of the same color, then let your ship's automatic firing function take care of the rest. But watch out! Destroying enemies will raise your combo, but it won't score you points. For that you'll need to tap the screen, "flipping" your ship into its opposite color and flipping your enemies from predators to prey. Of course, "flipping" also reduces your combo back to zero, so you'll want to see just how long you can hang on without tapping that screen. Should you "flip" or should you flee? Score now or hold out for the promise of even bigger rewards? In FlipShip, the choice is yours. FEATURES: * Intuitive tilt-based gameplay keeps you in control, no matter how intense the action gets. * Unique risk/reward scoring system increases the tension while your combos (and the enemy's numbers) rise. * Six dynamically adjusting difficulty levels tailor FlipShip's challenge to you! * Three different ships (each with their own playstyle) offer three different ways to "flip" your way to big scores! * Procedurally generated backgrounds give FlipShip a different look every time! * Full Game Center support with 50 different achievements to earn online or off! * In-app leaderboards let you compare FlipShip scores with friends (and enemies) across the world! * High definition visuals designed for the Retina Display! * Optimized for iPhone 3GS / iPod Touch 3G and newer devices.

FlipShip manages to take elements of a few terrific games and combine them into something fresh and new, proving once again that the whole can sometimes be greater than the sum of its parts. We would've liked to see a few more modes thrown into the mix, but overall, FlipShip is a terrific little high score chaser that nigh impossible to put down. Consider this one a must buy.

One of the finest games we've had the privilege of experiencing. It joins Tiny Wings, Angry Birds and Cut the Rope as a handful of quality titles you must absolutely have on either your iPhone or iPad.

Just an absolute joy. With mechanics that are nearly perfect, and a style that is difficult to out-do, this is a game that must be checked out by anyone who likes endless runner games, or anyone who just likes to feel happy while they play. This game is just fun.
90AppGamer
While the perfectly balanced scoring system encourages replays, it's really the presentation, effort and generally cute 60's vibe that makes Whale Trail stand out, alongside that instantly memorable soundtrack from Gruff Rhys. Whale Trail is a refreshing blast of multicoloured fun that will brighten up even the darkest day.
90AppSafari
Whale Trail's gameplay is simple yet addictive, making it the perfect kind of game for an iPhone.
90AppSmile
Replay value is great, as the endless nature gives you plenty of opportunity to best your score and compete against others.
90TouchArcade
Whale Trail contains all the components of a hit iOS game—colorful visuals, catchy music, a cute main character, and gameplay that's easy for anybody to pick up but hard to master. But somehow, it manages to not feel forced or contrived.
80AppSpy
'Been there, done that' isn't quite fair to say of a game like Whale Trail. Although it may seem like yet another endless title, its stellar level of presentation; clever level layout variation; and simple control scheme make it worth checking out, even if it doesn't last forever.
80Gamezebo
Simple to play, utterly charming, and completely addictive, Whale Trail has all the makings of a great mobile game.
80Pocket Gamer UK
A charming confection that's impossible not to like, with stellar production values and solid gameplay.
75Slide to Play
Whale Trail is like a pleasant psychedelic daydream that's over before you know it.
70Edge Magazine
It's a breezily entertaining flight through seven coloured environments, though it never quite generates the same feeling of mastery as its inspiration: reaching the Violet Zone for the second time isn't as significant an achievement as diving down to the undulating surface of Island 9.

I've play a lot of these but the one i really like that just came out is Nono Monkey. Its this where you know down plates that have animals on them , when they break the animal falls to bottom and lines up in order that you broke them. The object is to get matches (3 in a row) as fast as you can and as you get up there in levels more and more things try to interfere and slow you down. Pretty addictive and challenging. I like it anyway. check for yourself at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nono-monkey!/id455456570?ls=1&mt=8
