Bestbuy.com best sellers: September 24-30

Madden continues to tackle the console charts as NBA Live 07, NBA 2K7 double-team a pair of DS newcomers.

Madden mania continued to sweep the nation during the week of September 24 to 30, according to the latest sales rankings from Best Buy's Web site. The PlayStation 2 edition of the game was once again the top dog, with the Xbox 360 version tackling fifth and the Xbox version landing in ninth.

However, strong sales of the next-gen Madden might be affected by EA's announcement this week that it will be releasing additional content on Xbox Live Marketplace. Some have hailed it as a savvy business move, while others have accused EA of trying to nickel and dime consumers by selling them features that should've been in the $60 game in the first place.

The week also saw a different sport finish strong--a sport that no single publisher has a monopoly on. Electronic Arts' NBA Live 07 debuted solidly in second (PS2) and fourth (Xbox 360) places, while rival NBA 2K7 from 2K Sports wound up in third (Xbox 360) and seventh (PS2). Sony's first-party basketball game, NBA 07, fared far worse, spending its first week in stores all the way down in 59th place.

Don't like sports? Well, three non-athletic titles made the top 10 during the week, and all of them were for Nintendo's ever-popular portable, the Nintendo DS. Enduring favorite New Super Mario Bros. remained on the chart at number six, followed by newcomers Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team (eighth) and Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis (10th).

Live is great. Nothing against 2K Sports but EA is elite, NHL 07 rocks too. I wonder what's up with PSP game sales. Not looking too good.

awwww Only caught a couple of comments with that, oh well somthing to do if youre bored... oh and Jancotlano. Seriously Basket ball is pretty much evolved from Netball (a girls game) but then netball was evolved from other games as all spots are. Whats interesting is that Basket ball is Semi popular as a neiche sport in the rest of the world whereas American Football is unplayed anywhere else in the world other than Canada and Japan pretty much. But the real comedy comes in with the "World" seires, sporting support from a total of 1 Countries. Anyway have fun with your ever so inventive and remarkably unpopular sports there old boy

Zoidberg54, BURN OUT is not like madden! Burnout compared to other race car games has changes the rules in its games alot more then any other race game. Look at gt3 & 4 not much changed there. Burnout 1 & 2 was more racing, 3 had added take downs, 4 added ramming same way traffic out of your way, all of which make the games feel very different.

For Madden all they do is update the roster do some photoshop work on the box art and charge you 40-60 bucks for a "New" game lol.

Any sport where the ref has to stop and explain what just happened is retarded. Madden is just a name and from what I'm hearing people preferred NFL 2K.

Sorry jancotiano, but Basketball was invented by a physician in the Mcgill university, in Quebec, Canada. Americans didn't invent it. Same thing for Hockey, it comes from an amerindian sports game called lacrosse. As for football, they just changed the rules a bit, but the sports comes from many places in Greece and China. You fail. As for most sports game, just buy last year's edition for half of the price, and have the same fun. Who cares about the few change in the teams? It's not like they improved gameplay much.

"get off the sofa and play sports at the park ... it's much more fun. these sports video games are all slow and boring."

Wow, your lucky. No matter how hard i try, i find it very difficult to find 40 friends, thousands of dollars of equipment, and a football field to go out and play a game of football. Not to mention when its the middle of winter and theres 5 feet of snow on the ground.

But hey, i guess for people like you this isn't a problem, but i would assume that for many, this will usually be impossible.

I would like to see you try to "mob" me. Madden is awesome. You are retarded!

    Mantassi
You are so dumb. American football is so much more fun to watch than rugby. And netball? Americans invented basketball. End of story. Sorry we are so imaginative and beat the rest of the world at inventing sports, but we are the best.

The last game I enjoyed from EA was NBA Street Vol. 2 on GCN. It was a good game but all these other games they are putting out are just mediocore at best. I need to camp Best Buy and mob retards who buy Madden.

"Hehehe. Look at all these mad people. I love it. They get all upset that some game is selling more than another."

We're just frustrated that truly innovative and original games get stamped into the ground by the marketing machine of EA. If developers were people, and the game industry was one big room, then EA would be right up in your face with a megaphone, while the really great developers would be in a corner trying to yell over the noise.

It would be a lot easier to stop buying EA if they didn't have sole rights to NFL, AFL and I think one other. The Madden game's best years are when it had competition form the 2K franchise. Even if you hated the 2K franchise you have to admit it kept EA honest with their sequals.

You know, I'm all for this "STOP BUYING EA GAMES, YO!" stuff. But damned if I'm gonna give up Burnout. I know how these guys feel about buying madden every year, burnout is no different. They make minor changes from game to game and call it a sequel, but I can't stop buying them.

Its amazing how long New Super Mario Bros stays up there. I haven't even got it yet and I want it so imagine how many people want to get it but haven't. I think we will see it up there until November cause then you will have PS3 WIi, GOW, FEAR, so I think it will drop off then but it may comeback depending on the titles each system releases.

The average gamer doesn't seem to care how much EA has gone downhill in releasing lazy updates to successful sports franchises, while taking out all of the features and serving them without any polish whatsoever.

You think Rugby is the first game to use a ball (or equivelant object) and run with it? Neither American Footbal or Rugby was the first by a long shot. Let's not get our panties in a bunch, eh Manatassi?

I personally don't get how sports games sell so well. I mean, I follow some sports but I never felt the need to buy a game to simulate the sport...I guess because I don't like realistic games. If I wanted realism I'd go outside. But, great for EA, I guess. Soon this madness will die down and real creativity will regain the sales charts, hopefully.

I also buy one sport game per console too, since they are very similar from year to year. The Seahawks (they are from Seattle if you don't follow any sports) are my team and they should be awesome in Madden 07, I will wait for the PS3 version. This post is starting to sound like nerds vs. jocks or FPS fanboy vs. the guy that picked on them at school. This is call demographic to game makers and it also sell consoles in the US.

What? USC, my school is on the other one! I might have to get the college version too..... not really.

The sports games get the "free ride" mentioned, because the sports game fans have very low expectations when it comes to gaming. Give them stats, give them fantasy leagues, and they'll love it. Over, and over, and over, and over, and over...

Funny how I could say the same thing about any genre or fan base. These games sell for a reason, and the people who play them are no more idiotic than you. God forbid anyone should play sports as a child, or better yet in this case, a sports VIDEO GAME.

Why does a game like Rule of Rose get blasted for old controls, being too similar to silent hill, etc..............when these sports games are always the same? It seems like they get a free ride every year. And why doesn't EA just allow people to download a roster update every year for like $8 instead of getting a new game? Oh yeah, because then they'd actually have to make the game different and BETTER enough to warrant a yearly purchase. I guess we have marketplace competition to help take care of that though...........whoops, guess not.
