Nintendo 3DS Games Information

  • The Nintendo 3DS is the latest entrant since the advent of the Game Boy for mobile game platforms, which have been just as important and exciting as the home video-game consoles. In some ways, mobile game platforms have developed in more meaningful ways than their stationary counterparts. While both have seen major advances in technology, the recent ubiquity of mobile gaming is unmatched. With almost a 150 million units sold worldwide, making it the best-selling console in gaming history, the Nintendo DS is a perfect example of the popularity of mobile gaming, and its success, positions Nintendo's most recent handheld game platform, the Nintendo 3DS (N3DS), for an equal if not bigger success.

Credit Nintendo for many of the exciting moments in the history of mobile gaming, as the debut of each of Nintendo's portable consoles is always a major event. The Game & Watch, the Game Boy, the Game Boy Color, the Game Boy Advance, the Game Boy Advance SP, the Game Boy Micro, and even the much maligned Virtual Boy have all affected the video-game industry and they way we play games, but the Nintendo DS (NDS) might have been the biggest turning point of them all. While the Nintendo DS has seen many redesigns that address cosmetic and usability issues since its initial release, the Nintendo 3DS is Nintendo's first full-fledged, next-generation iteration of that handheld game platform.

The most striking difference between the Nintendo DS and the 3DS is in the console's name: It supports full 3D visuals. Unlike the 3D movies in theaters and 3D capable televisions in production from some manufacturers, the Nintendo does not require the user to wear special glasses to view the 3D image. Since the intensity of a 3D image might be distracting to some gamers (depending on the game), the 3DS includes a 3D slider switch that can scale the image from full 3D depth to regular 2D. In addition to displaying a 3D image, the Nintendo 3DS also includes a special camera which includes face-recognition technology that you can also use to take 3D pictures.

Even disregarding its new 3D technology, the 3DS is a big improvement on the Nintendo DS, as it can also produce far more detailed visuals. Whereas the Nintendo DS supports games with graphics comparable to the Nintendo 64 (N64), the 3DS can support games with graphics that are more comparable to the GameCube (GC) and the Wii.
