Background
No doubt you will have seen the various news items we've posted regarding the return of German melodic rockers Bad Sister. A staple on the 80's German hard rock scene, the band went into hiatus during the 90's, only to come out of hibernation in the 21st century. the previous incarnation of this band featuring lead singer Petra Degelow, though current singer Suzie Lohmar had been with the band since 1991. Bad Sister have been together in one shape or another since 1980, with the the two principle members being guitarist Sven Lange and drummer Kai-Ove Kessler. They have dabbled in various musical styles since those early days when they were named Bogart Joint, but primarily, Bad Sister live comfortably in the genres of AOR and melodic hard rock. Personally, it's great to see this band back in operation as I quite enjoyed their earlier albums, retaining a strong German presence within their overall sound, as do most of the bands coming out of that country, and one in which I appreciate. The fact that Bad Sister has two keyboard players..!! that just adds the icing to the cake, plus they are tailor made for a site like GLORY-DAZE.. lol!

The Songs
No doubting Bad Sister operate real well when the music is fast-paced. Like the latest model Audi travelling at high speed on the Autobahn, but when they drop gears to a slower speed, the results aren't quite as spectacular, though still highly listenable. Songs that touch the pure AOR genre include the opener 'Surrender', the rather awesome 'Through The Night', plus the synth fest of 'Heat Of The Night' and 'Blackmailed'. You gotta admire the incredible atmosphere generated by the two keyboardists on 'Take Me As I Am', the ivory tapping here is one for all the air keyboarders out there. Former singer Petra Degelow takes the lead on 'Talk To Ya Later' (no, not The Tubes version), again, this one is synth overdrive.. fantastic. Petra's vocal style lends a different colour to the album, away from Suzie's lead vocal. A couple of songs land in the classic rock/retro rock camp.. 'Rocky Road' is strong on that rock organ style, a la Uriah Heep/Lucifers Friend, as is 'Hard Times Shuffle'. I quite liked 'Unless You Talk To Me' which is an acoustic/electric affair not unlike Dutch rockers Angela And The Rude. There are three slower songs.. the two ballads 'Carry On', 'Don't Love Me Again' and the acoustic finale 'Last Train'. As per my opening paragraph, I think Bad Sister are much better on the faster songs, the power ballads though played superbly don't quite have the vocal finesse to make them true standouts.

In Summary
I've given this a few decent listens in different environments (home, car etc), and I thank Sven and the band for a copy of the CD, because the damn thing sounds extremely well produced. There are some very good songs here, most are quite strong with little filler - so thumbs up to the band. The only thing which may give cause for concern are the vocals, and though it's been said on the Net elsewhere, Suzie Lohmar has a solid voice with an unusual flavour, but to be fair, I can live with it. If you're one of those AOR fans who thrive on big keyboards with a bombastic flair a la fellow Germans such as Javan, Joal (well the first album mainly..), Rescue etc, then 'Because Rust Never Sleeps' will appeal greatly.
