Translated Pages: Korean, Vietnamese and Spanish

Fairfax County has a diverse community of cultures from all over the world. We all chose this community for the same reasons: quality education, friendly business environment and a quality of life second to none. To better serve our community we have translated some of our message into the prevalent languages of the district. While it may not be a perfect translation I hope my passion to build a better future for Fairfax County rings true.

Isn't It Obvious?

Once again, we have balanced our budget in Virginia in the most difficult and challenging financial environment since the Great Depression of the 1930s. It was my goal for this session of the General Assembly that we accomplish three things: first, that we maintain the car tax relief we currently enjoy, second, that the Local Composite Index (LCI) for school funding that finally adjusted to Fairfax County’s favor not be frozen at last year’s level granting us an additional $60 million over the biennium, and thirdly, that cuts to K-12 funding be minimal as the quality of our schools are the most critical factor in maintaining our home values.

Going Into Overtime

We went into overtime, although only for one extra day. The budget conferees from the Houseof Delegates and the Senate could not agree on reconciling their differing budgets until Sunday at 2 a.m. Compromise prevailed and we are able to present a spending plan for the rest of this fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, and for next fiscal year ending on June 30, 2012. The budget was balanced as it always is. We should be leaving Richmond late on Sunday night, Feb. 27, after a final vote on the budget having previously debated and passed 887 bills out of 1,882 that were introduced.

Senate OKs Transportation Bill

The governor’s Transportation Bill (SB1446) passed in the Senate this last week. It is a three-year package for accelerating bond issuance from $300 million to $600 million per year for road construction based on bonds approved in House Bill 3202 passed in 2006. This will be paid for through anticipated federal transportation grants to Virginia over the three-year period. These bonds cannot be used for road maintenance.
