Wendy's Could Soon Dethrone Burger King As Second-Biggest Burger Chain

First Posted: 11/29/11 06:43 PM ET Updated: 11/30/11 04:45 PM ET

In August, Burger King got rid its longtime mascot, a bizarre king wearing a golden crown. The coup d'etat replaced the king with a more domestic emblem, a mom. The timing, it now seems, was fortuitous -- Burger King must have known it could soon lose its royal standing as the second-biggest burger chain in America.

For now, Burger King still has its plum spot on the totem pole -- but according to Nancy Luna of the OC Register, a competitor is nipping at its heels.

Luna argues that Wendy's, the perennial runner-up to BK and McDonald's, could soon surpass Burger King in total revenue to become the second-biggest burger chain in America.

Her intel came from business analyst Mark Kalinowski, who argues Wendy's has done a better job differentiating itself from market leader McDonald's than Burger King has. Wendy's has launched a number of new menu items in recent months, including natural-cut french fries with sea salt and "Dave's Hot-n-Juicy Cheeseburger." Burger King has mirrored Wendy's, with new fries and a new burger, but its moves have come later and been less dramatic than Wendy's.

Four of the 10 biggest fast food chains in the country, by revenue, have menus oriented around burgers; together, they sell tens of billions of dollars worth of food every year. The number two fast food chain overall, though, is Subway.

Finally! Wendy's is moving up! Burger King is inedible for me, the meat is terrible and the fries are junk.

Wendy's has always had the best burgers of the big three fast food chains, now they're even better!

I don't eat fast food often, but when I do, it's BURGER KING !

I don't know if this means anything, but I have a Wendy's and a McDonalds in my small town (13,000 folks), and at 6 p.m. each day, the McDonalds has 2 or 3 people on the drive-in line. The Wendy's is PACKED, 10-15 cars on line. They must be doing something right. Frankly, I like Burger King the best of all three of them, but we don't have one in our town. And of course, we're talking about fast food. If I really want a burger that tastes like a burger should, I go to our local diner or a nearby steakhouse, depending on my finances.

Your town eats a lot of fast food!

Actually, our fast food places are on a "Main Drag" that goes from east to west in NJ, so we attract a lot of "passersby." And, as I said, this is around dinnertime.

But let's face it, fast food IS popular. It is ONE of the reasons I am morbidly obese and am working on the problem. I have lost 60 pounds in 3 months and still going strong, and I am NOT one of the people on line at Wendy's unless I am on the run, and getting chili and a salad (no dressing). Those are pretty good Weight Watchers choices for a dinner. (wink)

Sort of, you can take it as Americans slowly preferring quality even when eating trash. Maybe some of them are starting to wise up a bit.

Was I the only one who liked the king? I loved how a major US corporation would run such a odd add campaign. Granted, I liked the Geico cavemen and the SlapChop remix too, so maybe I just have weird tastes.

Burger King is gross..... I never understand why anyone would want to go there. Their fries taste wierd, their burgers are tasteless, and the ones I have been in in the past never seemed clean.
If I go out for fast food, which is not often, I prefer McD's their fries are the best and I love the Quarter pounder with cheese. Wendy's is just ok . There is one near me, but I haven't been there in a long time because I can't understand the counter people... I live in Southern Calif.

Really? To me, McDonald's has the weird fries, in my opinion, b/c they coat them in some kind of preservative to keep them fresh longer. Burger King's fries don't have this, and lose their freshness sooner, but they also taste better than McDonald's fries when fresh. If you mostly have McDonald's, then maybe that's why BK's fries taste odd to you. Also, BK's burgers aren't tasteless to me; are you getting them plain? That could make the difference b/c the BK burger was made with mayo and onions and all that in mind.

THANK YOU !

Actually to me, it seems like BK puts some kind of coating on their fries... remember back when they came out with their "new" fries? that's when I noticed some kind of strange artificial coating on them yuk! As far as their burgers, I do think they are tasteless, and I have had them with everything on them, I just don't like the taste of them at all. But to each their own...that's why there are many different places to go.
McD's salads are delicious too. My kids (16 &18) like Jack in the Box. And we like Del Taco, which makes a very good veggie burrito, I get mine with no beans extra lettuce yum. It will always be a battle to try to be the best, but its great that we live in a country where we have so many choices to please everyone :)

I agree, I haven't had Burger King many times b/c I don't do fast food often, but the few times I've been there, their food has been sub-par. I'll take McD's over both Wendy's and Burger King, although McD's isn't great either. Give me Harvey's any day. Not sure if Harvey's is in the US, but they should def. expand. A fast food chain that gives you flame broiled burgers with fresh toppings according to what YOU want... Now THAT is great fast food!

Burger King is now the Burger Queen. At least the ads will look better.

Wendy's burgers are OK, but their fries are not. In my location, the fries used to be very good, but, something changed. Fries are smaller and limp.

burger king's food went down hill. but they lost me when they ran that stupid King advertising campaign.
