No 30 (Assault Unit) Commando
This Commando was formed in September 1942 being originally known as 30 Royal Marines Commando. The Commando was primarily a naval unit although many personnel were from the Army.
Its main purpose was as an intelligence gathering unit. Although the men were trained in basic infantry skills members of this unit had special training in the recognition of enemy documents, search techniques, safe cracking, prisoner handling, photography, and escape techniques.
Accordingly training was very specialised and included parachute and boat work.
No 30 Commando was involved in all theatres of war but especially in Normandy and the final assault of Germany.
The Commando was redesignated 30 (Assault Unit) Commando in January1944 and in March 1945 as 30 Advance Unit before disbandment.
