For thousands of American service members leaving Iraq, this holiday season will be a special one as they reunite with their families. But not all returning soldiers will have a place to call home. The National Alliance to End Homelessness reports that veterans represent up to 20% of the homeless population in the United States, and that number is expected to rise in the coming years.
For 25 years, New York's homeless veterans have turned to The Doe Fund, a nonprofit whose mission is to break cycles of homelessness, crime, and addiction. Best known for the "men in blue" of its Ready, Willing & Able program, The Doe Fund helps veterans return to civilian life through transitional jobs, training, housing, counseling, and direct linkages to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and community support networks.
