The TIE fighter is the unforgettable symbol of the Imperial fleet. Carried aboard Star Destroyers and battle stations, TIE fighters are single-pilot vehicles designed for fast-paced dogfights with Rebel X-wings and other starfighters. The iconic TIE fighter led to other models in the TIE family including the dagger-shaped TIE Interceptor and the explosive-laden TIE bomber. The terrifying roar of a TIE's engines strikes fear into the hearts of all enemies of the Empire.
TIE fighters are short-range craft and lack a hyperdrive. As such, they must be ferried to combat zones aboard larger vessels. Imperial Star Destroyers carry squadrons of TIE fighters within their hangars, launching them from ventral bays.
Darth Vader was a highly skilled pilot, and flew his own custom modified TIE fighter. Elite TIE pilots would serve as his wingmen during combat missions.
The TIE fighter is faster and more maneuverable than the Rebel X-wing, but the Rebel craft boasts shields and more powerful laser weaponry.
The Rebel Y-wing fighter is much slower and less maneuverable than the TIE. The Imperial fighters made short work of the Y-wing fighters during the Battle of Yavin.
When the Millennium Falcon escaped the Death Star, it had to contend with a patrol of sentry ships. The Falcon blasted its way past four TIEs, and it was evident that given the countless fighters aboard the Death Star, the Empire had deliberately let the Rebels escape.
