Organic Milk Shortage Ruining Breakfast Across Northeast

If your run to the fancy bodega for a pint of organic milk comes with a bit of sticker shock, don't be surprised: there's a huge shortage of organic milk acros the country (and particularly on the East Coast), with farmers getting screwed as customers demand more.

While we do our fair share of teasing the Times, they handle this complex issue right, breaking it down in a way the average, non-farming shopper can (hopefully) understand: "The main reason for the shortage is that the cost of organic grain and hay to feed cows has gone up sharply while the price that farmers receive for their milk has not. That means that farmers feed their cows less, resulting in lower milk production. At the same time, fewer farmers have been converting from conventional dairying to organic." The icing on the cake is while all this is happening on the farm, customers have been demanding more organic milk across the country. “It’s a double whammy to have higher sales than you expect and less milk,” said the CEO of the farmers co-op that produces Organic Valley milk.

Retailers like Wegmans and Target (buy your groceries and your underwear, all in one place!) are raising prices and running out of milk, much to the chagrin of shoppers. But at the core of the issue is the simple fact that organic dairy farmers need to be paid more for their milk. As East Village restaurant Northern Spy Food Co. tweeted this morning in response to the article, "So much of what's fukt abt US ag policy and farm-to-consumer chain, right here."

Your own health suffers when you drink cow's milk:

Quit being a baby and give up the animal milk. Switch to nut milk! Easier to make from a jar of nut butter sea salt and water, safer; no bacteria from farm animals or heart clogging risks, and more compassionate for the animals.
  • Forge relationship with local farmers and buy direct.  Cuts out the middle men.  Of course grass fed operations don't feel the feed price issues and the product is much healthier.  One doesn't have to live in the country to buy direct either, we live in NYC and purchase our food direct from the farmers weekly...  And then there is the cheapest way to do it...make your own rice milk at home.  There are always alternatives.

almond milk, coconut milk, 7 grain milk, soy milk, hemp milk etc. healthier and kinder.  it is abnormal to drink from another specie.  that milk is good for the calves not for us. the more milk you drink the more calcium you lose.  it is a fact. that acidity in milk depletes the calcium in your bones!!!!  not to mention the poor dairy cows who are continuously impregnated while their calves are secluded in dark crates for veal. stop this madness.
  • JoshNY
Wait, we get to drink milk AND eat delicious veal?
  • felixthecat
people as you are the reason why society sucks and why so many people must suffer for the few assholes.
  • JoshNY
Who are the people who are being caused to suffer by my decision to drink milk?
  • jacqueline66
Anyone who wants an animal to suffer is sick in the head!
  • felixthecat
the diary cows and the calves and the fact that you find humor in their suffering and misery.  What a great member to society, not.
  • JoshNY
    Cows aren't people.
  • jacqueline66
Did you just realize this? Thanks captain obvious...lol
  • felixthecat
they are animals as we and feel pain as we do asshole. and you wouldn't give a damn about people as well if you find amusement in others' suffering.
  • JoshNY
Exactly, they are animals.  So when you said "so many people must suffer" you were talking out your ass.

When did I say I found amusement in people's suffering?
  • jacqueline66
Also, no one should have to do the job of killing animals all day long or being responsible for so many animals in such horrid conditions. It's an awful job and they turnover is about 100% every year according to Farm Sanctuary.
  • jacqueline66
People suffer greatly when animals are abused but I think Felix was not only referring to the atrocities inflicted on animals but the health of people who consume these filthy products.
  • smalll
I don't see why this is a problem.  It just lets consumers of organic products feel even more smug and superior to the rest of us because they'll be paying even more than they already were.

Plus, it will weed out the underpaid NQOCD poseurs who had the effrontery to buy organic because the prices were not quite stratospheric enough.
  • wean, people
  • PlumNYC
No, they don't need to be paid more. The cost of grain needs to be cheaper. Organic milk is already expensive.
  • Detex
and how are you planning to make grain cheaper?
  • PlumNYC
I'm not doing anything. The gvmt can subsidize it like they do with corn, until it's practically free to grow. So instead of corn for high fructose corn syrup, feed, etc. We can have grain, healthier animals, etc.
  • Detex
You realize YOU do pay for said subsidy, it is just called TAXES.
  • PlumNYC
Yes I know. I also pay for war, and other things I don't like. I would rather pay taxes for natural, organic food than for high fructose corn syrup and that one serving of tomato paste that counts as a vegetable in school lunches. I don't mind paying taxes and I don't mind paying taxes to help feed the country, but I would rather it were for good food and helping farmers, not corporations.
  • Unkle_Bob
Ummm... You realize that subsidies are a huge part of what's currently wrong with agriculture in the US, right?
