British actor Benedict Cumberbatch (better known as TV's Sherlock and as the voice of Smaug the dragon in The Hobbit) has reportedly joined the cast of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek sequel.

Deadline claims Cumberbatch "has been cast in a lead role in the film. No word yet on whether he'll be a hero or villain."

Variety, however, says "Cumberbatch has been tapped to play the villain in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2. Cumberbatch landed the role that Edgar Ramirez had auditioned for last month."

It was widely believed that Ramirez was up for the role of Khan. Does this mean we're looking at a British Khan? Or are the Khan rumors as bogus as many have believed?

Cumberbatch is currently onscreen in supporting roles in War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Variety adds that actor Noel Clarke has also been cast as a "a family man with a wife and young daughter."

UPDATED, Jan. 5: Cumberbatch was doing press today via satellite for the new season of Sherlock at the Television Critics Association winter press tour when he was inevitably asked about the Trek news. Here's his response:

"I'm sorry there's a lawyer standing here telling me that I can't say anything," Cumberbatch joked. "No, but I'm hugely hugely excited. And I'm very very flattered, but obviously I'm not here to talk about that. I'm just getting my head around the fact that it's happened. My headline on it is 'I'm over the moon.'"
