Damn It Feels Good to be a Gamer

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Jan 4, 2012 11:45 AM | Comment

BioShock, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, The Witcher, Crysis, and The Orange Box. That murderers' row of titles, among others, made 2007 my own personal best year ever in gaming. The writing in BioShock and its setting in the underwater city of Rapture were among the very finest I'd ever seen in a videogame. CoD 4 pushed the shooter genre forward like no FPS before it with the introduction RPG elements and killstreaks. The Witcher proved that hardcore RPGs are alive and well. Crysis became the benchmark for rig building. And The Orange Box delivered a package of games that will likely never be matched. Collectively, they made 2007 my instant response when asked to name gaming's best year. And then 2011 happened. Read More »

TOR Dancing Exploit [Fixed, Doesn't] Get You Banned

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Jan 4, 2012 6:54 AM | Comment

Update: BioWare has checked in with Massively to claim that the ban story is a hoax created with a doctored image of a ban email. You may safely resume dancing in combat like a fool.

Update 2: The game has now been patched, and dancing will no longer render you immune to damage.

Yesterday, the Illum loot exploit in Star Wars: The Old Republic was BioWare's Ban Du Jour. Today, making like Young MC and busting a move in the face of enemy attacks is your quick ticket to bandom. Yes, dancing will make you invincible to enemy attacks in SWTOR. And no, you shouldn't try it for yourself because BioWare has labeled it an exploit worthy of a ban. Read More »

File of the Day: Star Wars: Empire at War Mods

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Jan 3, 2012 12:47 PM | Comment

Star Wars: The Old Republic offers many a tip of the cap to the Holy Trilogy, including the Han-like figure frozen in carbonite in the Bounty Hunter's starship. These small flourishes have sent us journeying down nostalgia lane to re-experience all things Star Wars, and that brings us to our file of the day. In 2006 Petroglyph transformed our favorite galaxy far, far away into an RTS with Star Wars: Empire at War. And now you can transform the game with some of our favorite Empire at War Mods. Click on through to give the game an injection of Halo and Starship Troopers. Read More »

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Jan 3, 2012 7:03 AM | Comment

A ton of awards have been handed out over the past few weeks, but we're fairly certain Crytek had no interest in winning this one: Crysis 2 has been named the most pirated game of 2011, with nearly 4 million copies of the game illegally downloaded. Read More »

Check Out Cube World: a Voxel-Based Indie RPG

By Dan Stapleton | PC News | Jan 2, 2012 1:30 PM | Comment

Remember Voxels? For a while there these chunky 3D pixels were going to be the next big thing in computer graphics, but after a few games (notably Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, C&C2;: Tiberian Sun & Red Alert 2, Blade Runner, and Outcast) developers seemed to get sick of them, and pretty much everybody went back to good old-fashioned polygons.

There's some life left in these virtual cubes, though: Reddit spotted this trailer for a game tentatively called Cube World, a Voxel-based RPG that developer Wollay guestimates might be ready for download within a few months. Color me intrigued -- and click to watch the video. Read More »

Postal III Review

By Nathan Grayson | PC Reviews | Jan 2, 2012 11:43 AM | Comment

Here's the crazy thing about Postal III: it knows exactly what it is, and it really, really doesn't care. "GTA's physics are better," its sunglasses-clad main character constantly quips, rotating through an annoyingly short list of one-liners as he scores kills. One frustrating, friendly-fire-packed escort mission outright mocked me. "Good luck not hurting them in this AI clusterf***," said the intro text. "Hahahaha!" it adds, driving home that Running With Scissors is not only aware of how bad its game is, but thinks it's funny that we would pay for it and play it. So then, I'm forced to ask: Can a game be so hair-pullingly, gut-wrenchingly, face-palmingly bad it's good? Read More »

GameSpy's 2011 Videogame Awards: Day Five!

By GameSpy Staff | PC Special Features | Dec 30, 2011 4:49 AM | Comment

It's that time of year again: the presents are unwrapped, the Steam Holiday Sale is in full swing, and we're giving a tip our sweet green fedoras to the PC games that impressed us the most in 2011. This has been one of the most amazing years on record, and the list of awesome games the GameSpy crew had to whittle down to just a few winners was imposing indeed. Some of these calls were no-brainers, others made us want to bash each other's brains out and eat them. After all, what kind of game is Minecraft, anyway? But call them we did, and here's how it all went down. Read on to see which of the games that came out this year we think you absolutely can't afford to miss. Read More »

By Dan Stapleton | PC News | Dec 29, 2011 11:30 PM | Comment

Writing all of the stories in Star Wars: The Old Republic was a major project that took years -- and the work is far from over. We sat down with BioWare's lead writer, Daniel Erickson, to chat about the rhyme and reason behind the moral decisions and characters of TOR, and gain some insight into how to get the Star Wars roleplaying experience you're after. If you've ever wondered how much thought goes into writing a major roleplaying game, this interview will give you a glimpse. Read More »

No First-Party Mod Tools for JA: Back in Action

By Mike Nelson | PC News | Dec 29, 2011 9:22 AM | Comment

When we saw Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, er, in action earlier this month, one of the questions we wanted answered was would the game would ship with first-party mod tool support. If you recall, the original Jagged Alliance 2 -- which setting and level design works as a foundation for Back in Action -- never had this type of first-party support either. Read More »

The Old Republic Diaries: Path of the Jedi #6

By Leif Johnson | PC News | Dec 28, 2011 3:25 PM | Comment

The two level 24 Jedi Knights waiting outside the instance portal told me I wasn't ready for this. The class quest, one said, was terribly overpowered and not worth trying for several more levels. One had obviously just taken a beating himself, and for a moment I contemplated jumping back into my starship and contenting myself with making sand castles on Tatooine. Read More »
