The iPod line of portable media players was originally released on October 23, 2001.
The original iPod featured 5 GB of storage, and a mechanical scroll wheel along with pyhysical buttons. This version of the iPod eventually evolved into what is now known as the iPod Classic, which utilizes the same general design, albeit with a touch-sensitive navigational wheel, a color screen, video support, and storage up to 160 GB.In addition to the iPod Classic, Apple introduced a smaller iPod, dubbed the iPod Mini, on January 6, 2004. The iPod Mini is no longer available and only existed through two generations.
On September 7, 2005, the iPod Nano was introduced, ultimately replacing the iPod Mini. Now in its sixth generation, the iPod Nano has experienced more major physical redesigns than any other iPod model.
The screen-less iPod Shuffle was initially released on January 11, 2005. This model is the most affordable iPod, also boasting the smallest storage capacities.On September 5, 2007, Apple introduced the iPod Touch. This line of iPods share the same pyhsical design, and most functionality, of the Apple iPhone line of smartphones.
The iTunes Store was first made available on April 29, 2003. The iTunes Store was initially used to purchase and download music and videos to a computer to later be transferred to an iPod. The iTunes store eventually evolved to allow media to be downloaded over a Wi-Fi network with the iPod Touch.
