The New Introductory Note to ‘Faithful Citizenship’ Should Inspire Catholics in 2012

There has been a flurry of commentary on the Introductory Note added to the new version of “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.” Some have commented that the version just published by the bishops’ conference is the 2007 version, without revisions, and, …

This year, we’ll be forced to defend our pro-life, pro-family beliefs.

Catholic Advocate is ready to lead the charge and make this the year we stop the destructive, secular agenda that has been gaining ground in recent years.

Pro-abortion, pro-same sex marriage politicians will try desperately to convince voters that their anti-faith policies are best for America.

That’s why Deal Hudson and Matt Smith put together a list of ten ways progressives will try to mislead voters. We urgently need your help to sound the alarm about these issues. Please print this off to share or email to your friends and family and ask them to do the same.

Thank you in advance for your support. We are counting on you to help Catholic Advocate make a difference in 2012.

Catholic Advocate’s Deal W. Hudson and Matt Smith issued the following statement about the 2012 Iowa Caucus results:

“Senator Santorum’s achievement last night in Iowa demonstrates the political viability of a Catholic candidate who does not compromise on social issues and offers real world solutions to the challenges of the budget, the economy, and foreign policy, especially in the Middle East. Catholic Advocate congratulates Rick Santorum for the courage and determination of his ‘public witness.’”

Questions for Archdiocese of Boston Official Appearing with Rep. Barney Frank

Barney-Frank

Catholic Advocate Vice President Matt Smith today issued the following statement regarding the panel discussion “Truth, Lies and Politics” being held this evening, Jan. 3, in Newton, Massachusetts at the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center. The event has been promoted in the Boston Globe as “Truth, Lies and Politics, a panel discussion featuring [Congressman Barney] Frank, journalist Robert Kuttner, and Father J. Bryan Hehir [Archdiocese of Boston Secretary for Health Care and Social Services]. Author Leonard Fein moderates the program exploring the relationship (or lack thereof) between politicians and truth-telling.”

“Father Hehir has an opportunity this evening to represent the teachings of our Church. The question is: will Father Hehir himself speak the Truth tonight?” asked Smith. “Will he speak the Truth to Congressman Frank about marriage being between one man and one woman? Or address Congressman Frank’s 100% pro-abortion voting record? These are pressing issues of ‘truth-telling’ between politicians.”

According to Freedom to Marry, a pro-same sex marriage organization: “We need more Barney Franks in public life, not fewer, and fortunately we will always have his indelible example to work from.” From their own website, “Freedom to Marry is leading the campaign to overturn DOMA [Defense of Marriage Act] and is working across the country to win marriage in more states and educate the public about why marriage matters to same-sex couples and their families.”

Smith added, “With Congressman Frank’s retirement at the end of this year, will Father Hehir take the opportunity tonight to publicly speak the Truth that faithful Catholics do not need more representatives voting like Barney Frank in Washington if we are going to make progress on the settled issues of life and marriage?”

The Mail Grinch of the House of Representatives

For months now, Catholic Advocate has been alerting you to the attacks on our religious liberties in Washington, D.C. Now the House of Representatives Franking Commission – the entity that regulates how Members of Congress send mail to their constituents – is banning Christmas and Hanukkah Greetings.

Here is what Congressmen Joe Walsh (R, IL-08) and Mike Ross (D, AR-04) are doing about the issue:

Over the weekend, you may have heard from your constituents or fellow colleagues that the House Franking Commission will not allow Members to include holiday greetings, such as “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Hanukkah,” on their mail pieces and franked email newsletters.

The Franking Commission should not be in the business of limiting Members from addressing their constituents in the manner they chose and should certainly not be trying to enforce political correctness.

To address this matter, we are sending a bipartisan letter to Speaker Boehner and Minority Leader Pelosi along with Chairman Lungren and Ranking Member Brady of the Committee on House Administration asking them to revise these unnecessary rules. If the Senate can allow these specific greetings, why should the House not do so as well?

Sincerely,

JOE WALSH, Member of Congress

MIKE ROSS, Member of Congress

TAKE ACTION

Call your Member of Congress and ask them to sign the Walsh/Ross letter – Capitol Switchboard: 202-224-3121

E-mail the Franking Office and encourage them to let Members of Congress include holiday greetings in their constituent correspondence.

The Grey Lady at Christmas

I read the New York Times every day for about 25 years.  At this time of the year, I used to look forward to their Christmas coverage.  Since some might not realize or admit that the Paper of Record has substantially changed in its coverage of religious topics, I thought a look at the Grey Lady’s Christmas coverage would offer more insight into the media’s secularism.
