Follow Me Social Media WordPress Plugin

The Follow Me widget allows you to display links to all your social media profiles in one, easy-to-access button or window.

If you are like most Internet users, you have more than one social media profile on the web. Letting your friends and blog readers know what sites you use will allow you to connect in more places with new and current friends.

No coding is required. Simply download the Follow Me plugin below, insert the URLs of your profile pages, and start connecting.

Download the Follow Me plugin here.

Installation Instructions:

1. Upload the Follow Me folder with all contained files to your wp-content/plugins directory.

2. Go to the Plug-ins page in the WordPress Dashboard and click  Activate on the Follow-Me plugin.

3. Go to Settings > Follow Me Options in the Dashboard and add links to your social media profiles (make sure to use http:// before www or the link will not work)

4. Select the appropriate size and design for the button: default(small), medium, large, or box.

5. Finally, go to Design > Widgets in the Dashboard and add the Follow me widget to the sidebar.

NOTE: If you do not have a widget supported theme then simply drop in anywhere you want the widget to show up.

Using Wapple Architect plugin on my wordpress blog and Follow Me shows up as text only on iphone and when you click on the text e.g. Twitter, you get page not found 404. On a computer the same plugin works so I know the Twitter etc are configured. Peace.

This was awful – I ended up with a Follow Me button on my Word Press blog that took me to some shopping survey, even thought I copied my urls exactly

Care to share a link to your site? What you are explaining shouldn’t have anything to do with our plugin.

  • http://twitter.com/joehall Joe Hall

Jen please share a link to your site. I agree with Brian, this doesn’t sound like FollowMe related, but you might have bigger problems that you need to look closer at.

  • http://twitter.com/joehall Joe Hall

the skype protocol is skype:username so when you go to put in your skype name put “skype:username” in the URL field where username is where you place your skype name.

  • http://twitter.com/joehall Joe Hall

Click delete to delete an account. And to change delete and then add again with new info.

  • Mihai Cozma

After I click the floating tab of Follow Us and the popup appears, there is some text “–>”, only the superior half, between the grey background of the title of the small popup and the white background of the actual links.

  • http://twitter.com/joehall Joe Hall

Please post a link for us to look at. Then we can have a better idea of what might be going on.

Are you planning to release a blogger version?

  • eric

these instruction are very unclear. before the instructions you state, “No coding is required. Simply download the Follow Me plugin below, insert the URLs of your profile pages, and start connecting.” but the first stop in instructions are:
Upload the “Follow Me” folder with all contained files to your wp-content/plugins directory.

What is wp-content/plugins directory???? is this on our computer on somewhere on our blog site?

then u say: Go to the Plug-ins page in the WordPress Dashboard and click “Activate” on the Follow-Me plugin

    where is a WordPress Dashboard????

I guess these instructions are for people who know about these things. I have a blof and wanna add this, and the instruction dont guide me well at all :(

  • http://twitter.com/joehall Joe Hall

Hey Eric! Thanks so much for asking these awesome questions. For many WordPress beginners, all of this can be confusing. However, yesterday I created a youtube video for a different plugin showing exactly how to install a plugin. You can view the video below:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv2UIVhXWMo

However, it seems that you might also need some more help, if so feel free to take a look at the tutorials on this page:

I actually like yours a lot! :) It looks like the issue with your blog is that your template has the tag located in a div. it should be right before the tag. Otherwise the markup that is pushed through it becomes inherent to the rest of the page.

  • http://twitter.com/joehall Joe Hall

Eric, changing your permissions to 777 on the server will not change anything with this plugin because we store all link data in the WordPress database, not the file system. For your own security you might want to consult your web host about which is the correct settings to keep your file system secure, 777 is usually wide open.

As for the plugin, are you not seeing the links in the backend and front end? can you provide a URL?

  • http://twitter.com/joehall Joe Hall

Try disabling the plugin and then re-enabling it. That might fix your issue.

    Unfortunately it doesn`t :(

Very cool plugin. Easy to configure.

after you click the follow me button, the images for the links are broken. when i investigated further, i see that there is a %20 before the filename. ex: /%20Blipfm.png I’m looking through the plugin to find where I can remove this.

This is a good plugin, and reading through the comments it looks like a lot of beginners like it. A suggestion to help the beginners would be to have info prefilled and they just have to enter their usernames, page, email, etc.

ooh, also, what would be cool is adding a mailchimp, or newsletter subscribe text field to the box that pops up. lemme see if i can hack one in.

    inspiration comes through comments :)

  • http://www.daveydz.com David Diaz

well, I couldn’t figure out why the plugin added a space before the filename which would break the images for the tiles, so i decided to make my own follow me tab. using the easy fancybox plugin, some jquery, and my own css and image, i made one. Also, I added my newsletter sign up to the pop up.I think it cam out pretty good. Check it out here: http://www.daveydz.com/blog its on the right. hover over it and it should slide out then click on it. :)

Hey I really like this Plugin, but once installed (with new version selected) when you click on the floating Follow Me tab and the pop up window opens the social media icons appear right at the bottom of the screen and you have to scroll down to see them. • Gmccord

Well, I have confirmed that this only happens on FF4. FF3.6 and below are fine. I tried this from a MAC and PC with the same results, so its not a platform issue. It also doesn’t seem to be tied to the latest version of followme.
Any suggestions about where to begin troubleshooting this?

  • Sean

Different versions of PHP handle blocks of code differently. This plugin is compensating for the most recent version. Take a look at line 170 on follow-me.php, try changing the spacing or breaks where the html meets the PHP. I am not sure which is going to work for you because each version handles blocks differently.

    Good luck.

I don’t see any issues at that URL

  • Gray McCord

OK, great starting point! I looked at line 170 and couldn’t seem to change anything. I then looked for other instances where “row ->address; ” was referenced and found that it was line 241 in my installation that was the cause of my problem. What I noticed was that the PHP code for the “a” link was broken up into multiple lines. Hmmmmm. Maybe that has something to so with the 0A (LF) character in the link. Sure enough, I went in and combined the multiple lines dealing with the link into one, and voila, the problem went away. Now why this should only be an issue for FF4 is still a mystery, but I fixed it on my installation…..

  • http://twitter.com/joehall Joe Hall

Excellent work! Its probably only showing up for FF4 because of the way that FF4 reads line breaks in the middle of a tag.

I it possible to change the order of the followme networks I have set up? Also, you might want to add Google+.  I did my Google+: http://iplus.im/saul < my only gripe is that I'd like it, and my http://www.facebook.com/osakabentures nice and prominent – at the top of the followme options.  Fabulous plug, though, gents – one of my favorites, and well worth the time it takes to set up, say, for the ones (like current G+, I had to make my own icon) without available icons in your system.

I just upgraded to 3.1 with google+ support. There are no G+ icons showing on the site or on the dashboard. When I look in the plugin’s image file I don’r see ang G+ icons. Did yo forget to include these?

This issue has now been resolved. To fix it on your blog go to the plugins page and deactivate the plugin. Then delete the plugin form your plugins page and reinstall from the plugin repository. Don’t worry, your plugin settings will be saved during this fix.

In your sites CSS file you can add:

    img {border:none;}

  • http://twitter.com/joehall Joe Hall

You are free to edit any of the image files in the images folder in the plugin’s root folder.

Theres no easy way, you have to just put them in the order that you want them shown.

Nice looking plugin! I opted for the old version, to line up with other widgets. Could you include Bandcamp (http://bandcamp.com/) in your list of profile sites? It’s an increasingly popular option for musicians. Thanks.

What about follow me on a +1 (Google Plus) profile?

  • Elarson

Is there a way to use shortcodes to put the content of the Follow Me in a post/page?

  • https://webapp4.asu.edu/directory/person/1280970 CJ Cornell

Any way we can change the position of the tab?  (at least the vertical position?)

  • http://twitter.com/joehall Joe Hall

You should be able to turn on the mobile hide option in the settings panel. Good luck.

Could you be a little more specific?  Reading through someone else’s code is difficult, at best.  I tried to find the right CSS lines to alter  (well before I left this comment) … so if you could just provide a little hint, it would be very helpful (a line number or what you named the ID or class)?  Thanks

    Go to wp-content/plugins/follow-me/css/style.css

Starting at line 97 you will see 4 code blocks each declare the styles for the 4 different buttons: RightSmall, LeftSmall, RightLarge, and LeftLarge (or something like that). Each block will have the following:

    top: 50% !important;

To bring the button up find a smaller percentage. To bring it down, increase the percentage.

  • http://twitter.com/joehall Joe Hall

Good idea, maybe that should be added to future releases.

You need to use a subscription service like feedburner.com for that. Thats a whole different ballgame.

No, it isn’t duplicate page. The # symbol is a common place holder in javascript applications to make a link clickable.

Make sure that your theme has the wp_footer(); function called out in footer.php If not, add it.

Hi, folks. Thanks for creating the Follow Me WordPress Plugin. I have it on my blog.

Question — Do you have a version that can also be added to a regular website? I’d like to put it on my home page here: http://www.60SecondMarketer.com

    Thanks!

    Best,
    Jamie Turner
