Multiplayer

Game: GoldenEye 007

Before Halo and Call of Duty irreversibly changed the landscape of the first-person shooter, Goldeneye's multiplayer was the undisputed king of the console shooters. But unlike its next-gen successors, back in 1997 you weren't mindlessly mowing down anonymous opponents assembled from across the globe – you were ruthlessly sniping your best friend who was perched on the sofa right next to you. Like Mario Kart, Goldeneye's multiplayer doesn't have one defining moment – it generated thousands of idiosyncratic delights for everyone who ever wielded the Moonraker laser, hid in the Facility's toilets, and used Oddjob to cheat. (You know who you are, and should feel ashamed of yourself to this day.)
