There have been a few questions here on the blog and in our support forums regarding our upgrade plans beyond Gingerbread. We can today confirm that we plan to upgrade the entire 2011 Xperia™ portfolio* to the next version of Android known as Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich. We are working on merging our current Xperia™ experience with the new features in Android 4.0. More detailed information regarding this upgrade, timing and global availability will be communicated in due course here on the blog.

* “2011 Xperia™ Portfolio” refers to the following products: Xperia™ arc and arc S, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo and neo V, Xperia™ mini and mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active, Xperia™ ray as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™

the msm8255t is a brilliant chip… thats the one in the ARC S… its very capable and one of the BEST single core chips out there… in my honest opinion android software has a LOT of catching up to do to the hardware… i still dont think it can use dual core hardware…

        oh btw i am DooMLoRD@XDA ;)

This is all well and good, but what’s the point when half of the service provider’s don’t offer the updates/upgrades until 6+ months later, if at all?

Telstra Australia for example, the largest service provider in Australia by both network size and customer base, only recently made the Xperia X10 updates/upgrade available (6+ months after everyone else!), and still have no information as to when we’ll be getting the most recent (Android 2.3.4 “Gingerbread”) update, if at all..

I realize that the final decision rests with the service providers, but as the manufacturer, you should be putting pressure on the service providers to pull their thumbs out and release the updates/upgrades!

      Dear Sony,
Please understand that you are still selling your XPeria line of products released in 2010. There is no magical difference between X10 and the 2011 line of Xperia products. Kindly provide a valid reason, which will be logical, to the users of X10, for NOT UPDATING THEIR OS

        Dear Martina,
Would you like to comment a line or so for X10 users. I think it is unfair to stay mum instead of giving justifiable reason.
X10 users deserve a reply from you.
Thanks for showing your concerns for X10 users.

Well, this is a problem with your carrier, and that’s why I only buy no-brand phones or always debrand them. We can’t blame sony ericsson for everything.

        That’s such a cop-out.

Yes Android updates and upgrades traditionally depend on a service provider “allowing” it, however there are ways around this, ways that will allow the manufacturer to offer the update or upgrade directly… Further this, Sony Ericsson should be in constant communication with service providers regarding the status of update/upgrade availability, after all, if service providers aren’t offering the updates or upgrades in a timely fashion, it reflects badly on the manufacturer!

If Apple, HTC, Motorola and other manufacturers can get their updates and upgrades out in a timely fashion, there’s no realistic reason why Sony Ericsson can’t… Saying that it is beyond their control is nothing more than an excuse!

For me as a x10 user its good to have a x10 with an icecream sandwich os because I think it can run the os. Like the xperia mini it is obvious that x10 is one of the better xperia specs. I hope we reach the developer to support x10 because it is also a xperia product dont just leave it to gingerbread.

I hate to say it but since SE has closed down one of the main independant voices of Xperia X10 users on the internet (obvious that home truths and honesty are things that SE are still not wanting to acknowledge or deal with) with legal action, there is no-where that is really championing the cause for the X10 owners who were screwed by SE between 12 and 18 months ago.

I, like all the others who are tied to 2 year contracts with a phone that will not be further updated past Gingerbread, will have it out until it is time to renew their contract, then can happily say good riddance to SE and move to a company that actually releases new phones instead of talking about them and sells them with current software instead of out of date or backwards facing OS.

I don’t know if the X10 could handle ICS – but SE are good at making things fit, as they did with Gingerbread. I like the comment in the OP about a “logical reason” being given, but is that asking too much?

I’d love to think that somewhere someone at SE realises their error, but, if I’m honest, I think they probably do and they probably just don’t care about it, as they want to go on and sell more stuff to more people.

In the last quarter, for once, the iphone wasnt the most popular handset (all the fanboiz waiting for the, ahem, iphone 5….whoops) but it wasn’t SE that was the next biggest seller, was it?

Just can’t stand being taken for a ride again, and even though I like the SE kit, without the support and aftersales stuff, it just becomes a pain that i don’t need if I go elsewhere. I’m not the first and I’ll not be last to rant about this – bet SE can’t wait until the end of next year, by then all the 2 year contracts for original users should have expired and any muppet left on one by then deserves what they get for not doing their research first!

      Just my opinion….

I went with SE for this phone (mini pro) because of the unlockable bootloader so I could use third party roms to keep upto date. I’ve not even had to try that yet :)

Still looking around for an overclockable kernel though. >_>

I’m willing to put down my X10 to upgrade to a better phone but I believe that it can still run ICS (with the exception of RAM and a lower-end touch screen). XDA devs are already working towards this and it would be great if you can once more fix up that horrible reputation you made when you angered so many Sony fans who risked in investing one of your first gen Xperia Android phones. I understand that you want profit, but I’ll support you even more if you do upgrade the X10 to ICS. If RAM is the issue , however, I agree. While Gingerbread is better than Eclair, it still is a poorly scripted OS and requires more RAM. However, please work in coordination with XDA devs once more and give it a shot.
P.S. I’m looking forward to getting an Arc S in the near future because the Rumored Xperia HD has Micro SIM and doesn’t have a Micro SD Expansion slot, despite the awesome technology.
