More than a thousand collections contain a treasure trove of original scripts, production records, correspondence and other materials documenting the lives and careers of prominent individuals, as well as the activities of production companies, studios and film organizations.
From glamour shots to candids, from movie stills to makeup test photos, the 10 million images in the photographic collection provide a rich visual record of motion picture industry history.
The library’s collection of posters and art materials represents a wide range of productions, from early novelty films to current theatrical releases, and includes many rare and unique items.
The Margaret Herrick Library is a world-renowned, non-circulating reference and research collection devoted to the history and development of the motion picture as an art form and as an industry. Established in 1928, a year after the Academy was founded, the library moved to its current Beverly Hills location in 1991.
The library catalog includes bibliographic records for the library’s holdings of books, periodicals, scripts and posters, as well as information about archival collections.
Reference assistance is available in person at the library, as well as by e-mail and telephone. The National Film Information Service can undertake research for patrons outside Southern California.
