Mac Miller is artistic to High Schoolers

[–]zestways 0 points1 point ago

Considering that he just graduated high school about a year or so ago, I wouldn't say that's a bad thing.

[–]BoldFro 0 points1 point ago

As in high school students can feel guiltless about liking both Mac and Nas (or The Roots). He isn't routinely on the radio, making him obscure and cool to listen to for High Schoolers, but he's another sell out making music so he can smoke weed all day.

[–]tingeys 1 point2 points ago

How exactly is Mac a sellout? He's still making practically the same music he was when he was an unknown 17 year old and he's signed to an indie label...

[–]BoldFro 0 points1 point ago

Props to him for staying on an indie label, he's making more money that way. He has no features on his album, he's full of himself. He has a distinct voice but his beats are all over the place, nowhere in hip hop should an album feature production by Clams Casino and Mansions on the Moon. He's imitating trends started by other rappers. And there's that Cobra Starship song.

[–]dnemer 14 points15 points ago

well prob not the best PR move by Danny Brown, but who cares. Danny Brown dont give a fuck that is why he is who he is and people love him for it.

im sick of people hating on Danny cause of his style. hip hop fans are so homophobic. virtually anyone who tries to have a unique style is shitted on. that is why there is so little individuality in hip hop. I mean if you listen to other dudes like Prince, Michael Jackson, Bowie, late seventies beatles.. how can you hate on Danny?

[–]Ithm 8 points9 points ago

Cuz all those guys' voices didn't sound like someone scratching a chalkboard

[–]pirateballoon 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, honestly. I tried Danny Brown for most of the reasons in the OP but his voice was unbearable half the time. And the other half were more "bitch suck dick" punchlines than... well, when I tried out Odd Future for similar reasons funnily enough.

Still more interesting than Mac Miller though

[–]prose-before-hoes 1 point2 points ago

Actually I'm pretty sure Mac Miller's brother created the album art for Blue Slide Park

[–]KobraCola 23 points24 points ago

Well, obviously, if someone does like Mac Miller, then it's not funny to them. BTW, I'm a real, actual Mac Miller fan who also likes classic hip hop, I'd be more than willing to defend him, but if I say anything good about him on this subreddit, I'll probably just get downvoted.

[–]Forbes20[S] 10 points11 points ago

I feel you. I don't think he's bad at what he does, I just think he's different than all these other emcees.

[–]KobraCola 10 points11 points ago

Yeah, he's put in the "college rapper" category and does he mostly rap about getting bitches and partying and having fun, etc.? Yeah he does, but that's not all he raps about and rapping about those things doesn't make him a bad person. He's actually an adept rapper who works well with producers to pick interesting, original beats. You can dislike him because of his voice or judge him because you think he only raps about partying, but, let's be honest, most of the reason he's placed in the college rap genre is because he's a young white guy. If he was a slightly older black guy, there would be less hate for him IMO.

[–]TenCentPistolKel Mitchell 42 points43 points ago

If was an older black guy he wouldn't be hated cause no one would have ever heard of him.

[–]atm_snowball 1 point2 points ago

[–]KobraCola 0 points1 point ago

So he only got attention cause he's white? Not because he's talented? I don't think either you or I can say that, we don't know how much attention he would've gotten if he was black and slightly older.

[–]Slide_Show_Bob 14 points15 points ago

I'm not going to hate on the guy, but i think he got attention partially because his dad had money and the ability to get him hooked up with everything he needed to make a high quality production. Not 100 percent sure of that, but that's what I've heard ha. Other than that, good for him for makin it, just not really my style.

[–]KobraCola 4 points5 points ago

That's fair, and I didn't know about the dad thing, for all I know, you might be 100% right about that. But, from watching some of Mac's videos, I get the sense that he has a real respect for the true hip hop classics and pays homage to them from time to time. I fully respect him as a rapper. Hey, if his fans don't check out the classics or aren't "true" hip hop fans, there's nothing he can do about that.

[–]Slide_Show_Bob 2 points3 points ago

I'm ok with that. I think hating on people for their music is kind of dumb. If you were doing something that you didn't think sucked and people liked it, why would you not continue? Also, yea i just got that from someone that hated him and said they knew him. Said his dad works for a tv station or something and had access to all the cameras and recording stuff for him. It'd be kind of cool if that's bs and it became a huge rumor because of me ha

[–]KobraCola 0 points1 point ago

Haha, I don't plan on spreading that rumor, but he has always had a pretty high production value on his music videos.... suspicious....

[–]bigboi26 0 points1 point ago

i've seen some videos of when mac miller was a kid, he did seem pretty rich, but he also knows a lot about classic hip hop

[–]TenCentPistolKel Mitchell 6 points7 points ago

Well, personally I find his flow to be decent at best, his voice to be annoying, and his rhymes to be generic. And the only people I know who listen to him are young white girls who think he's cute and don't usually listen to hip hop. He raps about things rich white girls want to hear. I think if he was black he would just be dismissed as another wiz khalifa clone with less talent.

Regardless of who you actually like listening to, you have to admit that Mac Miller isn't doing anything new and Danny Brown is about as original and creative as possible in hip hop. Although I do get why some people don't like his voice.

[–]TenCentPistolKel Mitchell 1 point2 points ago

Also this is kind of a silly hypothetical, if he was a completely different person with a different background and perspective he wouldn't be rapping about the same frat guy issues, and he'd sound a lot different as well. (sorry can't edit on my phone)

[–]KobraCola 0 points1 point ago

I mean, this is personal opinion so neither of us are right or wrong, but I love his flow. If you find his voice annoying, then that sucks, but he can't change his voice. I don't think his rhymes are generic, but they're usually not super meaningful, which I don't think is a bad thing. Well I listen to him and I'm not a young white girl and I don't think he's cute and I love all hip hop, including the classics of course, so now you know someone different who listens to him at least. Again, some of his songs are about partying, but not all of them, he does, surprisingly enough, have a meaningful song or 2. Well, he already gets dismissed as a Wiz Khalifa clone, though I would argue he's much different and they're just similar because they're on the same record label.

I can't stand Danny Brown because of his absolutely grating voice. I recognize the irony of this when I'm defending Mac Miller against people who don't like his voice, but god damn, I listened to XXX twice and my ears started bleeding. I couldn't even focus on the lyrics because of the physical pain of listening to him.

For the record, Mac doesn't rap about frat guy issues, he's never even been to college, but he does rap about things young people enjoy doing, if that's a bad thing.

[–]xtoshilary 4 points5 points ago

he was a slighly older black guy he would be completely different... why is that even an argument? wtf... people hate on him because he's soft as fuck

[–]KobraCola -2 points-1 points ago

What if he was a slightly older black guy who rapped about the same exact things but with a different voice? I don't think people would hate him. I'm not saying this is the same thing, but most hip hop fans LOVE Wiz Khalifa's slightly older mixtapes. How is he "soft as fuck"? Like his skin is soft? Cause then I agree. But my skin is soft too. Thank god I'm not a rapper.

[–]Jamesisdead 3 points4 points ago

Honestly I don't like him because he is lyrically weak. If he was an older black guy nobody would have bought his album, but he isn't and he sold like hot cakes. He is a college rapper that is bad imo, go to Asher Roth's mixtapes if you want a good college rapper.

[–]aspenboarder 0 points1 point ago

Asher Roth is leaps and bounds ahead of most rappers out right now

[–]An0n_Sequitur 3 points4 points ago

I agree. People who hate mac don't necessarily hate mac, they just hate college rap. There's nothing wrong with bitches, weed and party hip hop, but that's all it is. It's like how there's nothing wrong with cartoons and shit but that's all they are.

[–]WumboJumbo 0 points1 point ago

You watching cartoons about bitches weed and party hip hop? :O

[–]falco_Lombardo 1 point2 points ago

you are very correct on the part about his beats. so pissed tho that no one better could have jumped on nikes on my feet. maybe spitta will make a cover. . . .dare to dream

[–]KobraCola 1 point2 points ago

Hey, if someone else wanted to rap over Nikes on My Feet, I'd be very down to hear them rap over it too.... but Mac did it first (and killed it IMO).

[–]falco_Lombardo 1 point2 points ago

killed it like dem deer did mufassa :(

[–]MasterCharles 1 point2 points ago

Dude wrote a song to his mom. Hard to hate that.

[–]KobraCola 1 point2 points ago

Yup, that's definitely only one of his emotional songs.

[–]BarryLincoln 0 points1 point ago

Yea, downvotes can be pretty devastating. Better keep your opinions to yourself.

[–]KobraCola 1 point2 points ago

I'm on the floor sobbing right now.

[–]JustATheoryHere 6 points7 points ago

I thought it was great how he brought it up. RS asks Brown if he liked Camp, and he said "I listened to it. Hey, it was better than Mac Miller's. That's my response."

That's awesome. He doesn't directly dis Gambino, but he only says that it's better than Mac Miller's, and I shouldn't have to reiterate what he said there.

[–]oaky 2 points3 points ago

you know some of this comes from feelings of jealousy, who the fuck hates on an album cover? that was his sad ass main point: his album cover is like ugh, what is this

[–]Forbes20[S] 1 point2 points ago

True, but Danny Brown had one of my favorite album covers of all time.

[–]Laterturdz 1 point2 points ago

I have listened to Mac Miller, he is whack. Weak lyrics, beats are weak and his fan base sucks.

[–]mruptown 2 points3 points ago

I think Mac Miller is bad but come on. There's not really much need to call him out like this. If he helps get bro's into good hip-hop then more power to him. it's obvious he knows his HH history, working with Premier and such. Danny Brown can make his own music and stfu about rappers that he thinks are beneath him.

[–]illmatic707 2 points3 points ago

To be honest I never have gotten into Danny Brown's shit. The stuff is actually terrible to me. Not hating on the guy, it's just not my shit.

[–]atm_snowball -1 points0 points ago

I like that song called re up about how he sells crack rocks.

[–]mruptown -1 points0 points ago

me neither, it's not terrible, just not worth all the hype IMO. so for him to call out some new cat on the scene when he's new himself seems silly.

[–]RickZee 4 points5 points ago

Mac Miller is the definition of corn ball. Nothing but truth spoken by Danny Brown.

[–]Trondolay 1 point2 points ago

I just saw his Forbes interview and in the first fifteen seconds he compared himself to Tribe and The Doors. I was actually angry.

His Forbes Interview

[–]Theolodious 2 points3 points ago

He's literally nothing like The Doors. The only thing that makes him like Tribe is that he makes hip hop.

[–]me_gusta760 1 point2 points ago

I agree with this, but Anyone have a songs of Danny Browns to recommend? everything Ive heard so far has sounded like tech n9ne but with a lot of talking loudly and yelling.

[–]beskidtbawler 1 point2 points ago

Seriously, this guy isn't even semi-good... He just sucks, i know danish rappers doing better than him ( This is just pathetic, let that man out off his misery. Macmiller certainly isn't a legend, but neither is Danny Brown. "Yyyyuuuuuuuccchhhh!!!!!!!" Cite, Pusha T

[–]redadidasjumpsuit 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one wondering... Source?

[–]colon1388 0 points1 point ago

I think Mac has a good ear for beats and production but if he wants to be taken seriously by the hip hop community i think he will have to get away from the college rap style but at the same time i realize he's just a 19 yr old white kid who just graduated HS so all he knows is partying nd getting fucked up maybe he'll mature one day as will his music.

[–]phractured -4 points-3 points ago

That's funny because Danny Brown also sucks tremendously.

[–]cheeseisntdairy -1 points0 points ago

Truest words ever to have been spoken.

[–]itsokaytryagain212 2 points3 points ago

What I like the most about Mac Miller is that he's a genuine Hip Hop head. He's listed Big L, ATCQ, and countless other legends as inspirations for his music. If he was just some punk kid who did this for the lulz, or for the fame, money, etc. then I'd think less of him, but he actually has love for the game. As for his music, I don't necessarily mind it. Let's not forget, he's only 19, so Mac Miller may be talking about teenage things now, but give him a few years before he'll start talking about things young adults discuss.

[–]bythepowerofthor 0 points1 point ago

Mac Miller is a legit Hip Hop head, he's run (or atleast use to) a late night hip hop block on a local KC radion station called Black Clover for atleast 10+ years. Shit, that's how I got into hip hop.

[–]tingeys 4 points5 points ago

I think you're confusing Mac Miller with Mac Lethal.

[–]bythepowerofthor 1 point2 points ago

Woah totally am. Nothing to see here...

[–]glowghost 0 points1 point ago

haha yeah, 10 years ago Mac Miller was 9

[–]Forbes20[S] 0 points1 point ago

9 year old spinning classic hip hop albums on the radio. Sounds right
