Turn Off the Noise

I am studying for my post master’s certificate at Holy Apostles College. One of the classes that I took this semester was Catechetics (with a dynamite teacher, Sr. Mary Anne Linder, FSE). This class was helpful and inspiring for all of us who are teaching CCD in the local parishes.
For our final project we had to read C.S. Lewis’s Screwtape Letters and rewrite one of the letters in a creative way.... READ MORE
Facing Last Judgment

In my confirmation class, I like to tell the kids stories to help them remember the truths they are learning.
When we learn about the Eucharist I tell them the story of St. Tarcisius and ask why would this young man die for Jesus if he was just carrying a piece of bread?
When we talk about God the Father, I do a dramatic telling of the prodigal son to portray how much God loves each of us.

When I ruminated on chore charts a few weeks ago, I had just begun my new approach to chores. It had been only a few days since I’d abandoned my old methods and started this new, “free form” way of getting the job done.
I’m here to report that I didn’t find the new approach to be exactly what I wanted. I needed to tweak things a bit.
I finally got my thoughts together and realized a few things:

Build 100 Bulletin Boards

Reader Debby wrote me this week to seek the creative help of our friends here at F&F. She finds herself with a huge request from her pastor: to fill 100 bulletin boards! Here’s Debby’s note:
“Hi, my name is Debby and I have been asked by my pastor to design and fill almost 100 (!!!) bulletin boards. The school has just been closed by our bishop due to lack of student body, and the facility will now... READ MORE
The Bunny's Angel

When I decided to major in theology in college, one of the reasons I did it was so that when my future children asked the hard questions, I’d be able to answer some of them.
I pictured solemn dinner table discussions about topics like Purgatory and the Beatific Vision. My kids would know exactly what “Oh happy fault!” means, and the difference between plenary and partial indulgences. I could teach... READ MORE

Here’s my Question of the Day: what have you found to be the most effective method for eradicating potty mouth?
Rebecca’s recent post (though not directly related) has me thinking about the universal challenge of teaching our children the importance of acceptable language and also nipping unacceptable usage in the bud. This can be tough! I can talk about using good language until I’m blue in the face... READ MORE
Big Boy Bed

Last night was Henry’s second official night in the Big Boy Bed. He did pretty good, getting out of bed only a handful of times before settling in to sweet, sweet slumber.
This was our second attempt at the bed. The first was a few months before Isabel was born and I quickly realized that naptime was going to become an issue once the crib was gone. My pregnant self made an executive decision and back... READ MORE

More on Faith Parenting Alone

Last time we reflected on the reality that our culture is no longer a Christian culture, and so faith-divided families are more and more prevalent.
But at the same time, from God’s perspective, those situations are the very ones that he will use to reclaim this culture for Christ – they are not outside his purview; he is at work in the midst of them and will make use of your daily efforts to be his... READ MORE
Nurturing Faith When You're On Your Own

Q: What do you think about faith-parenting alone?
A: The resonance that this question has had with our readers (Lisa received a slew of heartfelt responses) reflects the reality that we are in a post-Christian culture.
In the early centuries of the Church, while the culture of the Roman Empire was still pagan, people became Christians individually, instead of being brought up in a Christian family.... READ MORE
