Remembering One Bishop, Welcoming Another

My diocese has a new Bishop!

Today, I will pause my workday to attend 12:15 mass at our beautiful cathedral in remembrance of Bishop John T. Steinbock, who died one year ago today. During the past year, our diocese has mourned his loss, prayed for our new Bishop, and been ably and faithfully led by Msgr. Myron Cotta.

Last week, early Thursday morning, we received the happy news of the appointment of our new shepherd—- Bishop Armando X. Ochoa... READ MORE

No Easy Surrenders!

Last week’s post on the threat to the First Amendment right to free exercise of religion posed by Health and Human Services rules slated to take effect next summer garnered some attention on facebook and google+.

I posted to spread the word, and to point out some unintended consequences of the effort to force pro-lifers to assent to abortion, so was pleased in that regard.

But jeepers, the comments... READ MORE

Church News

Where do you turn for news and information?

The blogosphere is abuzz this afternoon with commentary and speculation about the appointment of a new Archbishop for Philadelphia. Because no official announcement has been made, I prefer to wait until we have news from the Vatican or the USCCB before engaging in a discussion about this appointment, which will truly be historic and important for the future of our Church in the US.

I’m pondering the... READ MORE

Fighting Fair

good guidelines from our Bishops

I recently read an article that shared this list of guidelines for fighting fair in a marriage. The list is from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and has some important reminders and tips for good communication in marriage and how to keep the love alive by treating each other with respect. Enjoy!

25 Ways To Fight Fair
Please note that the words “fight” and “fighting fair” are used... READ MORE

Fishy Fridays

the return of Friday abstinence

Have you heard that the bishops of England & Wales have returned their dioceses to meatless Fridays?

The reason the bishops give for the move is the desire for common witness:

The Bishops wish to re-establish the practice of Friday penance in the lives of the faithful as a clear and distinctive mark of their own Catholic identity. They recognise that the best habits are those which are acquired as... READ MORE

Unique For A Reason

USCCB resources for defending marriage

The Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee in Defense of Marriage has a host of useful resources on that topic.

Links to Church documents, videos, the latest news about Church positions on state issues—

—and a very good “FAQ” section, with answers not only from a religious perspective, but arguments that can be used when you are discussing these issues with anyone.

Bishops Bet on Ball

Super Bowl fun!

On Rachel’s topics of football and food, here’s a fun story I read today:

The bishops of the dioceses of Pittsburgh and Green Bay have made a friendly bet on Sunday’s Super Bowl Game. You can read the whole story here, but the gist of it is that bishops bet on the game, and charities will benefit. Who doesn’t love a little friendly inter-diocesan competition?

Not being a football fan, I don’t care... READ MORE

Prayers for Bishop Steinbock

The bishop of Fresno, John Steinbock, is in critical condition, battling lung cancer.

His essay on Christians and cancer, written to his diocese, is here, and includes this:

“I know people are praying for me.  When they tell me this I often simply thank them.  For those who are closer and who would understand, I tell them to pray, not that God take away the cancer, but that he gives me the grace to witness all the more to his love and goodness in my life because of the cancer and the suffering He sends me. It’s all part of God’s plan, to be like him, to bear our cross with Jesus, to witness His love, to get to heaven, to be with Him for all eternity.”

Our Bishops Have Been Busy

A big week for the USCCB

If you’ve spent any time online in Catholic circles today, it’s likely that you heard the big, historic news about the election of Archbishop Timothy Dolan to the post of President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.  NC Register superhero Tim Drake has the story here, but if you really want the moment by moment scoop be sure to follow Tim on Twitter

Archbishop Dolan’s election... READ MORE
