Stock My Bookshelf

recommend some Lenten reading

I stock a shelf of spiritual reading at the back of my parish. It makes a negligible amount of money for St. Jerome’s but hopefully makes edifying reading easily accessible.

I’m getting ready to stock the shelf for Lent. I have my stand-bys and favorites, but wonder what you’d recommend?

Keep in mind there’s a limited budget so the works should be:

  • inexpensive

  • of general interest

  • appropriate for Lent

  • and of course faithfully Catholic

"Call Within a Call"

On listening and following

Today is the 100th anniversary of Mother Teresa’s birth, and the day is being widely celebrated.

On the radio this afternoon, I caught a snippet of Al Kresta’s segment on the topic. His guest talked about how Mother Teresa had been living happily as a nun until she felt the call to serve the poorest of the poor. It was Teresa’s “call within a call,” she said.

Since then I’ve been thinking about that... READ MORE

Virtue Rather Than Advice

There is always work to be done by example, goodness, and prayer. We can enter into closer relationships with souls that are lukewarm or estranged from the faith, so as to lead them gradually, by the power of our patience, gentleness and goodness, by the influence of virtue rather than advice, back to a more Christian life or to the faith itself. By entering into friendly relationships with people totally opposed to religion we can, by our goodness and virtue, destroy their prejudices and bring them completely to God.

Can a Mom Connect With Her Teen Son?

Ask a Priest vol. 15

Q: I am a mom of a 14 year old son. He talks quite a bit with his dad about sports and school and such, but clams up with me. I don’t have this problem with my two older daughters. I would love to help encourage him to grow in his faith life, but am I being unrealistic? Should a mom expect a more “distant” faith relationship with her son?

It’s hard to generalize.  The character of a mom’s faith-relationship... READ MORE

Overcome Your Lenten Temptations

Ask a Priest vol. 10

Q: My 11-year-old son decided to give up sweets for Lent, but at two weeks into Lent he’s in misery about wishing to have a dessert.

I have coached him from different angles—“Look what a strong person you are becoming” or “Why don’t you choose a different sacrifice? You know you can change your sacrifice” or “When you really want that sweet and you feel angry or desperate, think of Christ’s suffering... READ MORE

Don't Give Up Chocolate for Lent

Grow closer to Christ Instead

A few months ago, I was honored to be asked to review a copy of Consoling the Heart of Jesus: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat by Br. Michael Gaitley, MIC.

I get a lot of books in the mail, and many of them are spiritual ones. But in many years not one of them has spoken to my heart the way that this book has.

Brother Michael has a rare gift for speaking to simple souls and encouraging them to draw closer... READ MORE

'Is It a Sin To Be Fat?'

Ask a Priest vol. 6

Q: Is it a sin to be fat? I have been overweight almost my entire life. I’ve tried all kinds of diets but there does not seem to be any permanent solution that works for me. I feel bad when I eat poorly and don’t exercise, but when I think about trying to lose weight again, I feel desperate and hopeless.

A: The easy answer to this question is that, certainly, being fat is not a sin. Being overweight... READ MORE

Mass from across Town

Participating when you can't be there

I’ve caught a cold from my kids, and yesterday I was sick as anything and barely got out of bed all day long.

This was sad because it was Sunday.

I strongly dislike being sick on Sundays.  Even with the baby-wrangling that’s involved, Mass at our parish always revitalizes me.  I love going.

Unfortunately, yesterday morning I was croaking like a frog and couldn’t stop coughing.  I certainly didn’t... READ MORE
