Monument to Orange

The monument to Orange was built in honor of 210 anniversary of Odessa. The sculpture is an orange with one segment out. Instead of it there is a figure of Russian emperor Pavel I.

The monument symbolizes the event that took place in the end of 18th century, when Pavel I agreed not to cancel Ekaterina' rescript about Black sea port and city foundation on the place of Turkish fortress captured by Russian troops. It is said to have happened because the citizens of Odessa sent him the cart of oranges.

The project of the monument was made by Odessan sculptor A. Tokarev and was considered to be the best of 11 other projects that participated in the competition.

Originally installed at Langeronovskaya street near Archaeological Museum , it was moved in year 2007 to the Bulvar Iskusstv (boulevard of Arts).
