The Battle of Nantwich, on this day in 1644, was the first clear victory for Parliamentary forces in the English Civil War. William Brereton distinguished himself in the fighting as one of the commanders serving under Thomas Fairfax. Brereton had attended Brasenose College from 1621, when he was 16, but left without a degree. Credit: ODNB
