Given the profitability of the original The Last Exorcism, which grossed $62.5 million worldwide on a budget of $1.6 million, a sequel was pretty much a foregone conclusion. We already knew that Damien Chazelle had been tapped to write the The Last Exorcism 2 and that Ashley Bell had once again agreed to star as Nell Sweetzer.
Now we know who's directing. That'll be Ed Gass-Donnelly (This Beautiful City, Small Town Murder Songs). And he'll begin shooting the Eli Roth produced sequel soon. Like, next month soon.
Per Deadline, "Production has been set to begin on the sequel to horror/thriller hit The Last Exorcism next month in New Orleans. Ed Gass-Donnelly will direct the R-rated follow-up to the 2010 PG-13 pic that grossed $70 million worldwide on a budget of $1.5 million. Star Ashley Bell is returning to reprise her role as Nell Sweetzer for the Damien Chazelle-penned film. As with the original, Eli Roth is producing via Arcade Pictures with Eric Newman, Marc Abraham and Tom Bliss producing via Strike Entertainment."
Interestingly enough, the article indicates that the producers are consciously aiming for an 'R' rating for this followup to the PG13 original. Producer Eric Newman, "The first film worked great as a PG-13 psychological film, but now we want to go R-rated and show the true horror of what this subject matter offers. The biggest creative challenge will be coming up with the right title!"
He's right about the last bit. Is it too late to go the prequel route and call this film The 2nd To Last Exorcism? Whatever it's called, delivery of the film is expected in late 2012, which I suppose means we're looking at a January 2013 release date.
Can't say I was that big of a fan of the first, I didn't find it scary at all. People hated the ending, but I thought it was the only interesting part. But I guess I'll end up seeing the 2nd to see where they take it. Plus it's rare when I pass on a theatrically released horror film.
The first was great social commentary on what a gigantic scam religion is, coupled with a few tense moments, culminating in the biggest let down/cop out ending in history. Should have ended when they were driving away from the town, would have been much stronger IMO.
Another vote for the ending was the only thing I liked about it. It was a dumb ending but at least something happened. We went to the midnight premiere and the collective boos in the theater was deafening. I dont care if its rated NC-17 this time around, Im not watching it.
This was a decent film. I enjoyed it, probably because I saw it in a theater alone in the dark and not with a collective group of morons booing at the screen like the user above me.
"It'll be R-rated". You know what I want them to say? "It'll be a good movie with great performances, a solid script, and some very effective moments at building tension". I don't care if it's G, as long as they can deliver a good movie, that's really all that matters.
Sorry for double post, but if anyone's curious, I actually liked the first one. Very suspenseful, decent story. If you want a good exorcism, please, for the love of GOD do not see "The Devil Inside" or "The Rite". I saw both, going in with an open mind, I was so bored that I even wanted the demon to take my soul! Oh Hollywood, when will you make a good horror movie again. Hopefully these guys can.
I'm in for a sequel. The first one was a lot more enjoyable and fun that most of the garbage that comes out. I had a blast watching this one in theater because the whole audience was divided on the religious aspects discussed in the film. One guy got up with his girlfriend and walked out the theater shouting "F THIS MOVIE!" Lol.
Rated R eh? Just maybe this one might be better. Big maybe though. The first one was lame and overrated but that couldve been due to the PG-13 rating. Leave that shit for the Twilight series. This is supposed to be horror.
So they say now and when it comes out it will be PG-13 and these movies never work in R and are never scary PA3 was the only one that was scary. Devil inside sucked :( ummm first last exorcism was a joke and fuckin blew hope the 2nd will be scary and violent
I liked the first one. It was not the best exorcism movie ever, but it was still pretty good. I just don't get why they are glorifying that it is R-rated. It doesn't sound right to me.
I agree that a movie shouldn't need to be hyped as being Rated R in order to be good or scary...Poltergeist and Jaws were scary and they were PG! Sigh.
The first was solid, I'll wait and see how this turns out. It's probably gonna be another found-footage cash-in sequel, which will render it a pathetic disappointment. You know, like Paranormal Activity 2.
Well I shall go into this one with an open mind, as I really wasn't expecting much from the original but found it to be pretty good. I enjoyed it, but I can understand why others didn't.
I'm a bit of a sucker for Exorcism style films as they, when done well, really seem to get under my skin.
So yeah, count me in for the sequel.
I actually really liked the first one! The ending completely caught me off guard and Ashley Bell was amazing in it! She has true talent, with acting and being able to contort her body. I'll definitely check out the sequel, but I doubt it will be as interesting as the first.
the first one was good.....but was missing something....but idk y i love this demon...heaven vs hell and all that stuff type of horror movies
