Weekend Conquest: Crusader Kings II Demo Released

By Dan Stapleton | PC News | Feb 3, 2012 5:00 PM | Comment

Want to conquer something this weekend? You can't save or play multiplayer, but the Crusader Kings II demo will let you take over a big chunk of medieval Europe with the power of turn-based strategy and conspiracy. Given Paradox's recent history of somewhat buggy releases, it's a really good idea to test drive a demo before buying. Give it a shot, and let us know what you think in the comments. Read More »

BioWare Advises That It "Wouldn't Be a Bad Idea" to Keep Your Mass Effect 3 Saves

By Nathan Grayson | PC News | Feb 3, 2012 2:31 PM | Comment

Shepard's final showdown with the Reapers (presumably involving pistols at dawn and copious space tumbleweeds) is nearly at hand, and well, the word "final" doesn't really leave much room for interpretation. Over. Done. Finished. Kaput. Or at least, you'd think so. Those words, however, are somewhat at odds with "giant mega-franchise that saves the universe from having too much money." So, of course, BioWare wants to keep it going. But how? Read More »

Bethesda Dates Skyrim Creation Kit for Tuesday, Hints at Extra "Special Surprise"

By Nathan Grayson | PC News | Feb 3, 2012 2:29 PM | Comment

What could be better than the power to shape an entire world as you see fit? A surprise, of course! Sure, come February 7, you'll be able to bend Skyrim to your every dragon-battling, cheese-wheel-rolling whim, but who can resist the mysterious allure of a surprise? "For our Skyrim PC fans, the Creation Kit is on track for release on Tuesday. And, we also have a special surprise with it," tweeted Bethesda's Pete Hines. So, what do you think it is? I'm hoping for a shout that unleashes a herd of especially aggressive bunnies. Or better companion AI. Whichever. Read More »

Preview: Hands On with Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai

By Dan Stapleton | PC Previews | Feb 3, 2012 2:18 PM | Comment

Guns? So hot right now. Fighting wars with pointy things was all the rage in 16th century Japan, but a couple hundred years later, as Western influence brought political strife and fancy new technology to the country, firearms and cannons took Japan by storm. The very arrival of that technology provided an occasion to use it. Read More »

Natural Selection 2 Trailer Has Gorillas, Jetpacks

By Nathan Grayson | PC News | Feb 3, 2012 2:00 PM | Comment

I feel the need to apologize. I have lured you into this dangerous word jungle under false pretenses. There aren't any actual gorillas in the latest Natural Selection 2 trailer. Probably because -- based on the selection of marine-mashing beasties on display here -- gorillas went extinct from sheer terror. Who needs damn dirty apes, though, when you can have a giant, triceratops-like Onos, aka "the gorilla"? And that's only the tip of the writhing, acid-spitting iceberg. I, for instance, find myself especially intrigued by the playable creature whose eyes are apparently inside its mouth. Marines, meanwhile, can now flee in terror using jetpacks, turning the game into some amazing-looking RTS/RPG/Tribes hybrid. And hey, you need only pre-order the game to access the beta. So, on that note, bye. Maybe forever. Read More »

1UP Predicts the Superbowl Outcome in Skyrim

By Dan Stapleton | PC News | Feb 3, 2012 1:13 PM | Comment

Traditonally, EA has predicted the winner of the Superbowl using the latest Madden game. Boring! This year, 1UP has a much more entertaining (if lopsided) method of determining where to place our bets: a Skyrim battle. On one side, representing the Patriots, are a team of Skyrim's own nationalistic faction, the Stormcloaks. On the other: an equivalent number of literal giants. Who will win? Watch the video after the jump. Read More »

It's nearly five years old, it's now free, and it doesn't look like the hat party will be slowing down anytime soon. Valve announced that there is a "ton of stuff" on the horizon for Team Fortress 2, including a "brand new" secret project. Hit the jump to begin the speculation. Read More »

Cyanide Provides Another Peek at Game of Thrones

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Feb 3, 2012 7:25 AM | Comment

Cyanide's first attempt at a Game of Thrones videogame, the RTS Genesis, disappointed for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the fact it didn't feature the characters fans of the franchise have come to know and love in the books and the HBO miniseries. That will change with the upcoming Game of Thrones RPG, Cyanide promises, but the devs still aren't ready to show us any Starks or Lannisters. See what the studio is ready to share in the new Game of Thrones Riverspring trailer within. Read More »

Impressions: King Arthur II: The Role-Playing Wargame Suffers from Framerate Curse

By Rob Zacny | PC Articles | Feb 2, 2012 3:33 PM | Comment

Our full review will be up next week, but King Arthur II has some major performance issues we think you should know about today, in case you're considering buying it this weekend. Here are our reviewer's early impressions.

I'm still playing -- and largely enjoying -- King Arthur II's main campaign, but it is clear that it'll be impossible to recommend without major caveats. It's hard to enjoy a strategy game when it's encumbered by a bizarrely bad framerate and poor interface design that make chores out of simple tasks like opening a window or moving a unit. THQ Delays Metro: Last Light, Begins Searching for Helping Hand on Warhammer 40K MMO

By Nathan Grayson | PC News | Feb 2, 2012 3:16 PM | Comment

THQ hasn't exactly been having the best time of things lately. To put it in perspective, you may have woken up and stubbed your toe this morning. Ouch, right? Well, THQ woke up and laid off 240 people. Unfortunately, things have to get worse before they get better, but THQ's not going down without a fight. Good things come to those who wait. Today, though, THQ's definitely emphasizing the "wait" part. Read More »

Origin Adds Seven More Publishers, Alan Wake

By Nathan Grayson | PC News | Feb 2, 2012 3:11 PM | Comment

Origin may not be doing a whole lot to set itself apart from the rest of the pack, but it's beginning to look like a mighty tempting proposition if you're kind of tired and tabbing over to Steam sounds really hard right now. Today, EA announced that it's added seven more aisles to its infinite virtual storefront, which I imagine to look something like an M.C. Escher painting mixed with a Wal-Mart. Foremost among them is Remedy Entertainment, who's bringing Alan Wake along for the ride on day one. Iceberg Interactive, Strategy First, Macro Games, Selectsoft, and Legendo Entertainment are also joining Origin's ranks. So then, honest truth time: Aside from EA mainstays like BF3, have you bought anything off Origin? If so, did it... did it hurt? Read More »

Ubisoft Hardware Switch to Render DRM-ed Games Temporarily Unplayable Next Week

By Nathan Grayson | PC News | Feb 2, 2012 2:18 PM | Comment

As a PC gamer, you have likely expressed your distaste for Ubisoft's reviled brand of convenience-slaying DRM in everything from word and deed to song and interpretive dance. And yet, it refuses to die -- even when some merciful soul yanks the cord on its servers. Instead, it's simply reborn -- like a phoenix, but with more terribleness -- in a fiery explosion that renders your favorite games temporarily unplayable. Or a server transfer. Regardless, beginning next Tuesday, games like Tom Clancy's HAWX 2, Might & Magic: Heroes 6 and The Settlers 7 (only the first of which is a Tom Clancy game, somewhat disappointingly) will cease to function entirely, according to Eurogamer. The one-time activation process for new games, meanwhile, be out of order until maintenance is complete. I've contacted Ubisoft to ask exactly how long the outage will last. Read More »
