Oscars 2012: Muppets v Mendes

It's a two horse race for Original Song at this year's awards

It is not a great year for musicians at this year's Oscars.

Only two tracks have been nominated in the Original Song category, where as normally there are five.

None of the Golden Globe song nominees got a look in.

Favourites to make an appearance included Lady Gaga, Elton John, Chris Cornell, Sinead O Connor and Mary J Blige.

Trent Reznor is also absent from the list for Original Song and Best Score, despite the positive response to his work on the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo soundtrack. 

This year it is between 'Man or Muppet' by Flight of the Conchords Bret McKenzie, from The Muppets film and 'Real in Rio' by Sergio Mendes and Carlinhos Brown taken from the film, Rio.

We spoke to Chris Hewitt from Empire Magazine to get his take on this year's song nominations:
