Alaska Air shakes off fuel costs with strong profit

Alaska Air Group reported a second quarter profit, finishing in the black despite markedly higher fuel costs. Dow Jones Newswires writes Alaska Airlines' parent company "posted a profit of $28.8 million, or 78 cents a share, down from $58.6 million, or $1.60 a share, a year earlier. Excluding fuel hedging and other items, earnings increased to $2.44 from $2.29 a share." That was in line with Wall Street expectations.
