Selenographia by Johann Hevelius
Comment: Hevelius gave many objects on the Moon's surface names which have remained in astronomical nomenclature until this day. The work was dedicated to king Wladyslaw IV. Selenographia made the Gdansk astronomer famous in the whole Europe. Presented book was very artistically edited. The copy, one of the two which have survived around the world (the other is kept at the National Library in Paris), contains copperplates coloured with watercolor probably by Hevelius himself, in some cases also drawn and engraved by him. Frontispis and a portrait of the author were made by Jeremias Falck.
Featured prints: 1. Frontispis (ornamented title sheet) engraved by a copper engraver Jeremias Falck on basis of a drawing of Adolf Boy. It depicts Alhazen, an Arab astronomer from the 11th century, and Galileus, holding together the title sheet of the work. Above them there is Urania, a muse of astronomy, with a telescope in her hand and Cupids holding a sash with an inscription in Latin: "raise your eyes to high matters". Below the title there are Gdansk coat of arms and a panorama of Gdansk. 2. A map of the Moon (title in ornamented cartouche) drawn and engraved by Johann Hevelius in 1645. 3. A moving print [rycina ruchoma?] of a winter full moon being observed by Johann Hevelius in Gdansk. Drawing and engraving done also by the astronomer. 4. A phase of the Moon being observed by the astronomer in Gdansk at 3 in the morning on the 31st of December 1643. The print made by Johann Hevelius. 5. An eclipse of the Jupiter being observed by Johann Hevelius in the evening on the 24th of December 1646. In two small circles there are observations of the Jupiter. Drawing and engraving done also by the astronomer. Location: Library of Polish Academy of Science (PAN). |
