A wet and clumsy RTS.
A shooter with a message.
Should you be worried?
For those gamers with a lot of patience and a burning hatred of all things DLC, Bethesda has now released an Ultimate Edition of 2010's Fallout: New Vegas that includes all the post-release goodies (Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road) for $40. Now you can snap that up and laugh at everybody who paid $90 total when FNV and each DLC chunk was released. Of course, those gamers are happily playing with Skyrim and its shiny new high-rez texture pack right now, so they may not notice. Hit the jump for the trailer. Read More »
I played The Darkness II alone in a dark room. I wasn't ever actually scared, or even startled, but I sure was entertained by the action. Presented in a slick-looking graphic-novel art style (which serves as a reminder of The Darkness' comic book origins) this shooter is the bloody, yet surprisingly well-told monster-horror story of demonically empowered mob boss Jackie Estacado battling thugs, cultists, and a biblical force of evil for the soul of his dead girlfriend. As expected, Bethesda's special surprise tied to today's Creation Kit launch came in the form of the official Skyrim high-resolution texture pack. Anxious to see how the updated game performs, I downloaded the sizable 3GB file and trekked back into the Great White North. (Skyrim, not Canada.) Read More »
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning begins with a back-from-the-dead storyline, which is appropriate because the early stages -- including a tutorial masquerading as an opening level -- feel stiff with rigor mortis. Give it time, though, and the debut from the duo of 38 Studios and Big Huge Games reveals itself as deep, different, and with more variety than a Baskin Robbins. And once I got a real taste of Reckoning's role-playing action, I wanted to go all Chunk in Goonies and sample each and every one of the many flavors it has to offer. Read More »
Aside from Minecraft, Notch is known for one major thing: talking big. He's opinionated. He has a lot to say. He owns a neat hat. Famously, he once attempted to rocket jump out of the way of a Bethesda lawsuit with a Quake match. That, however, never came to fruition. So naturally, one might fear that this sudden Psychonauts 2 business will turn out to be all bark and no bite. Thus far, however, things are looking up. "Tim and Markus are talking," a Double Fine rep told Eurogamer. "Who knows what might happen?" So this is no longer one-sided tweet bluster. Business is occurring! Cross your fingers, folks. Cross them until they bleed. Read More »
Game titles nowadays are hard. Oftentimes, they tell you far too much without really telling you anything at all. However, in a gaming kingdom (of Amalur: Reckoning Remix 2012 - Double Advent VII Edition: Fall of the Risen Samurai) ruled by overwrought jargon, Shoot Many Robots is elegant in its simplicity. "This is a game about blasting robots until they're fit for the scrap heap's scrap heap," it may as well proclaim. "And that's all." In practice, that means it looks a lot like old-school arcade shoot 'em up Metal Slug mixed with Borderlands. So basically, stupid amounts of dumb fun. Check out the full trailer after the break, and ache to shake the hand of the person who coined the phrase "diagnosis: squirrel." Read More »
Botanicula is not a gardening sim starring Dracula. Initially, that revelation nearly shook me to my core. All my hopes and dreams for the young medium of videogames: dashed. But then I did some digging and discovered Botanicula's true identity as a wonderfully whimsical adventure about teensy tiny plant creatures saving their tree from dastardly parasites. On top of that, it's the latest off-the-wall offspring of Machinarium developer Amanita Design. Basically, it looks wonderful. Sorry, Dracula. Your heart-wrenching plight of being unable to truly enjoy the fruits of your labor for fear of bursting into flames in the sun's cruel rays will have to wait. Check out trailers introducing three of the game's main characters after the break. Read More »
If there was ever any doubt that the PC version of Skyrim gave you the most bang for your buck, there sure isn't anymore. Bethesda has finally released the
official modding tools, which are expected to turn the already-crazy
Skyrim modding scene up to 11. You'll be able to grab the download
through Steam shortly, and use the
official Wiki page to figure out how to use it. This is also
the launch of the Steam Workshop, which will let you
search for and automatically download and install mods that others have
uploaded, all without leaving Steam. To celebrate the release,
Skyrim's on sale for $40!
But what if you're not a modder, and already own Skyrim? You too are in
luck, because that "special surprise" for PC gamers Bethesda
promised has arrived as well. Read More »
Double Fine's Tim Schafer would love to create a sequel to his cult classic psychic adventure, Psychonauts. Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson wants to help. And just like that, seven years after the original, it looks like Psychonauts 2 might finally happen. Read More »
I was going to intro this article with the whole sarcastic "Holy cow, guys, this is a novel concept" shtick, but the "2" on the end of Indie Gala 2 makes that rather silly. So yes, Indie Gala 2 is the latest in an ever-expanding line of lesser-known games glued together by strange, arcane pay-what-you-want magics. But there's also a twist: all tiers of this bundle were not created equal. Read More »
Remember that big Half-Life 2: Episode Three protest that was supposed to take place last weekend? Well, it sort of, uh, didn't. I mean, it occurred, technically speaking, but didn't exactly manage to make the megaton splash its organizers were hoping for. Even after the Steam group ballooned all the way out to 50,000 members, only 13,000 took up crowbars alongside their comrades in arms, according to Kotaku. And the rest? Perhaps they suddenly decided gaming wasn't for them and took up competitive crocheting. Or, slightly more likely: they no-showed, relegating the collective call of "Rise and shine, Mr Freeman" to 11th on Steam's charts. Valve hasn't made any mention of the relatively subdued keyboard warrior rallying cry, and I'm guessing it won't pipe up until it's good and ready. Read More »
As far as shooting dudes goes, there's nothing I saw in the hour-and-a-half of Spec Ops: The Line shown at last week's demo event (on Xbox 360) that I haven't seen a dozen times before. As a third-person perspective modern military shooter, it's definitely competent, but not distinguished. You and two AI teammates barge into cover-based firefight after cover-based firefight against waves of soldiers using the usual array of weaponry, kicking down doors and tossing grenades until the bad guys stop moving. What's unusual and remarkable about Spec Ops is that, during the lulls between gunplay, it has the balls to depict war as nasty, bloody, and emotionally traumatic business, rather than a consequence-free action adventure. Do you enjoy defending towers? Are you a fan of shooting things right in the face? So what I'm asking, I guess, is do you play videogames at all ever? If so, Sanctum's sure to make you squeal with more glee than that one wildly popular musical TV show. You know the one: Metalocalypse. At any rate, Sanctum combines TD and FPS into a shockingly cohesive whole, and now it's getting a much-deserved sequel. Joystiq brings word that Sanctum 2 is en route to a 2013 launch, but beyond that, details are scant for now. However, the original's only $3.39 on Steam to celebrate the occasion, so your only excuse now is Sloth, arguably the deadliest (and most adorable) of all the Seven Deadly Sins. Read More »
Microsoft sends word that its free-to-play flight sim is less than a month away from spreading its wings. Amusingly, the ESRB has labeled Microsoft Flight as containing "Mild Violence" and "Crude Humor." Given that this is a non-combat flight sim, I'm interested to see how they've managed to work in violent flatulence. Some kind of experimental new propulsion system, perhaps? If you haven't heard much about it yet, check out our preview while you wait, and watch the latest "Webisode" making-of video below. Read More »
We don't know when the actual invites will go out, but if you're hungry for some hot mech-on-mech shooter action you can now stake out a spot in line for the closed beta of the amazing-looking Hawken. Alternatively you can wait until December 12th, 2012 for the fully baked version. If you're not excited about Hawken yet, check out the trailer below, and you will be. Read More »
