Fight or Flight

Should we feel bad for feeling nervous?

Here’s a funny video that actually left me with a lot to think about:

I’m guessing the point of the video is that we don’t really know who people are, we shouldn’t be quick to judge and maybe just because someone looks a certain way that isn’t who they really are. I get it. And the video is cute (and kinda sweet somehow, when all the bikers cheer them on for being brave). So not to ruin a good moment,... READ MORE

Remembering 9/11 With Prayer

On this tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, let us remember to pray. Here are the words Pope Benedict XVI prayed when he visited Ground Zero three years ago:

O God of love, compassion, and healing,
look on us, people of many different faiths
and traditions,
who gather today at this site,
the scene of incredible violence and pain.
We ask you in your goodness
to give eternal light... READ MORE

Scaredy-Cat Mom

I used to love flying. Then I had a child.

Here’s a strange phenomenon I’ve never seen addressed in print.

I used to adore flying.

Now it terrifies me, and the transition pre-dates 9-11.

I have lucid memories of a turbulent collegiate flight to Europe that terrified many of my seat-mates, but didn’t bother me.

Perhaps I was just too motion-sick to be afraid, but I’m temperamentally pragmatic and tend to weigh probabilities more than worst-case... READ MORE

Body Scans and My Fear of Flying

with baby too!

This Friday will find me flying across the country to sunny California with an infant in tow. Though I’ve flown with infants many times before, this trip has me feeling a bit more daunted than usual.

Every time I turn around, it seems someone has another horror story to tell about the new security measures they faced at the airport. Have any of you flown with children lately? Maybe you can help me... READ MORE

She Shouldn't Be Afraid

...but it's okay for me?

For years my daughter was terrified to have clothes put on over her head.

We’d become resigned to it, become experts at sliding shirts and dresses over her small ribs, at maneuvering shoulders through necklines.

Then a few months ago, she finally responded to my coaxing and agreed to try putting a shirt over her head. I promised her that the hole was big enough, and she summoned her courage, grabbed... READ MORE

The Gift of Fear

Novena to the Holy Spirit Day 2

Day 2 The Gift of Fear:

Friendly Reminder: Go to Confession!

Get the grace that's waiting for you

We all need spiritual nudges now and then.

And when it comes to the sacrament of reconciliation, some of us need a really big nudge (read: kick in the pants) to get ourselves there.

I used to aim for going to confession once a month. That meant that in reality, I got there every 2-3 months. No good.

So now I aim for every 2 weeks. And that means I do usually get there about once a month. Every once... READ MORE

Fear & Fun

Behold, my children’s first experience with a roller coaster.

It’s the log flume at Wonderland in Ocean City, NJ, where we spent last week.

The terror in their faces here belies the fact they all begged to ride again afterwards.

The 5-yr-old, interestingly (I almost didn’t let him ride) was the most enthusiastic. “Mom! It’s really scary and then it’s fun!” he exulted.

That applies to almost everything, I find.

In Jesus' Name, Amen

Giving our children the tools to fight fear

I took a course in college called Catholic Spirituality, and we did a unit on spiritual warfare.

We read the writings of a couple of the Desert Fathers on the topic of fighting demons, and also studied a book by the chief exorcist at the Vatican.  (Disclaimer: I can’t personally recommend Fr. Amorth’s book, since our professor summarized it for us instead of having us read it.)

The whole class was... READ MORE

Out Spokin’

that video gave me a tic

I just finished watching the amazing bike video posted by Danielle earlier today. I’ll admit it left me with some complicated emotions, feelings that ranged from “oh my gosh that is amazing” to “oh my gosh what if my boys decide to try that one day” to “oh my gosh I need to go lie down”.

Even before Henry broke his leg last week, I had my safety issues. I can go into those another time, as I’m too raw to deal with them right now. But I will say that the way Henry broke his leg did not involve any of my prior fear factors. So now I have the joy of adding to an already decent-sized list a few new things to fret about. I’m trying to chill out, but the odds are not stacked in my favor.

In the spirit of me not being totally neurotic, here is a cool video sent along to me a while back by Fr. Tim, my husband’s college roommate who can also, like my husband, recite large chunks of dialoge from most movies starring Clint Eastwood or Chuck Norris. This video is either Parkour, or it is footage of my boys in the backyard, I’m not sure which.
