Reports of Missing and Deceased Aug. 2, 2006
Beginning Aug. 1, the remaining 135 people on the official missing list from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita will transition from the Louisiana Family Assistance Center to local law enforcement agencies. Callers to the missing hotline (1-866-326-9393) wishing to make new missing reports will be referred to the appropriate local law enforcement agency where the missing person lived prior to the storms.
On March 1, 2006, the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team closed the Victim Identification Center in Carville, La. The Department of Health and Hospitals previously received information on deceased victims of Hurricane Katrina from Victim Identification Center staff. This information no longer will be provided to DHH following its closure. The identification process has been carried out by the local coroners for each parish with support from the State Medical Examiner as necessary.
