Preorders and smartphonesFebruary 3, 2012 by

So that bundle Sony announced last week for the Vita is a great choice to make, I think. Greg Miller supported his thought that you should buy a 3G Vita this week. Sure, I was always planning on the First Edition bundle (and this one has no Little Deviants or case) but it has a bigger memory card and the data pass and PSN game (which also comes with the First Edition now). I wanted to be sure I could get a launch bundle, so I checked online, first at Best Buy, but their website said preorders were sold out for it (this was on Tuesday). So I call the store, they tell me I can preorder it in person. Yes! When I get there, however, the Launch Bundle SKU isn't in their preorder touch screen. The gaming supervisor looks on the website, and the preorder is now available, not sold out. Bottom line: Launch Bundle successfully preordered.

My Mass Effect 3 preorder plan didn't go as well. I want the N7 Edition plus the extra Gamestop preorder bonus. Apparently, Gamestop is sold out online and in store. Bottom line: I still don't have ME3 preordered.

I also realized this week that the Galaxy Nexus is really, really nice. A friend of mine got one this week and I must say I love the huge screen, the Face Unlock feature, and the multitasking. Speaking of that, I don't have much experience with Android OS but it's smoother and more intuitive than I thought.

Now, Super Bowl prediction. The Giants are tied for my least favorite team in the NFL (Dallas), but I think they have a very good chance to win it, unfortunately. With Gronk out and Brady's confidence supposedly shaken, New England isn't favored by many I don't think. However, I am going to go New England 24 New York 20. I can only hope I'm right. Thanks for reading.

Classroom enjoyment. Oh, and new gaming news, of courseJanuary 27, 2012 by

So I'm taking a class called Internet & Society and the book we're using is probably the only book for school I have enjoyed reading, ever (besides some novels that were good). It's called The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman. It has good insight into the changing of our society and world because of the internet and technology. The class is legit and the topic for my group presentation is Movies, TV, and Gaming. The presentation is about how the internet has affected the industries from you topic.

News hit today about a new PS Vita 3G/Wifi bundle. Check it out.  After reading Scott Lowe's feature about not buying the 3G version, I began doubting the First Edition bundle. But this new bundle seems like a no-brainer across all SKUs at launch. What do you guys think?

On the note of Playstation, I've been listening to the Official Playstation Blogcast this week, catching up on the episodes and Greg Miller was on episode 6 and just mentioned in his origin story that if you want to get into the video game industry (the journalism side anyway), to keep writing and communicating with others. This is exactly why I started using MyIGN, to talk to other gamers about what we love.

On a last gaming note for this week, a new trailer for Mass Effect 3 came out today, this time for multiplayer. Special Forces trailer. This game is going to be so epic, I'm going to lose myself in it and be consumed over spring break and likely throughout the summer. It's also the perfect example of why school is at such conflict with my video game habits. I want to play more than I can, and I'm going to be pulled in by Mass Effect 3. Bioware has serious talent.

Well, another week, another blog. Thanks for reading! Follow me here or on Twitter if you want.

Blogcast, IPs, DLC, and Comic adviceJanuary 21, 2012 by

Alright, here we go. A day late, got caught up watching Thor last night.

I'm starting to listen to the Official Playstation Blogcast, trying to catch up.  It's a great way to find out about what's happening with Playstation (in addition to Podcast Beyond!). The semester started this week and it looks like my classes are pretty legit.  We got to talk about SOPA and PIPA in my Internet & Society class.  Finally, my classes look like they're going to include my interests.  My video game production is inevitably going to go way down from break but I'll try to keep up on Uncharted 3 and Gears 3, especially with the DLC that came out this week.  Another game I started late this week is Mirror's Edge.  It is such a unique game, I am so glad I finally bought it.  I love that EA went out on a limb for something like this.  Big publishers have the power to push new and unique IPs and although they don't always sell in great amounts, it is something that I believe the industry needs.

The Uncharted 3 Flashback pack 1 is 4 maps from U2, but with updated weather and lighting effects. Here's the Playstation Blog link. Gears 3 Fenix Rising DLC has 5 maps and new character skins, along with more achievements. The "Again!" achievement is Re-upping twice, pretty ridiculous. Here's a link.

On the sports front, it's Championship Weekend in the NFL. My picks were half off last weekend, but I'm predicting again. San Fran over NYG and New England over Baltimore.

As another side note, I'm considering getting into comics. I have always loved certain characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men, and of course the movies, but I have never truly read a series, but I consider myself a Marvel guy, and got access to some X-Men issues because I bought the First Class Blu-ray.  Any suggestions/advice on where a completely inexperienced comic book reader can begin would be appreciated.

Heavy Rain, Underworld, and a new semesterJanuary 13, 2012 by

Another week down, another game down, preparation for Underworld: Awakening complete.

This last week of winter break I tried to wrap up some things before the semester starts next week. Heavy Rain platinum trophy was unlocked yesterday. The multiple endings were definitely welcome, but I couldn't help but ask why there is no ending in which the Origami Killer is arrested and taken alive. Another point about the game, it's so refreshing to know that there is no sequel planned. Pretty much all stories in general today are expected to have a sequel or even more, but Quantic Dream gave us a standalone experience that was unfortunately somewhat under the radar outside of the gaming faithful.

In movies, I'm excited about Underworld next week. I'm not too harsh of a critic, action usually fits well with me so if I get to see it next week, I'm sure I'll like it. The last couple of weeks I've been watching the other three to be ready for the sequel. In fact, as I'm typing this, I'm watching special features from Evolution.

Another thing from last week, Mass Effect. I finished the third novel today, Retribution. Under the 2 month mark for the game now. Here's the preorder bonuses if you haven't seen them yet. I think I'm sold on the N7 Collector's edition.

Thanks for reading, here's the wrap up with my NFL playoff predictions (despite my last week being horribly wrong): Saints over 49ers, Pats over Broncos, Ravens over Texans, and Packers to beat the G-Men.

Week 1 of 2012January 6, 2012 by

Let's keep this rolling from last week's decision, or my New Year's Resolution. I finished inFamous 2 this past weekend, Hero-style. Crazy ending. Loved it. Sucker Punch, well done. Next up this week is Heavy Rain. Late to the party, I know, but the Director's Cut was the right time for me to jump in to this exclusive. Graphics are a little washed out and it is different from any game I've played before, but the story has me pretty hooked. In other gaming news, I platinum'd Madden 12, with the help of a Jerry Rice card in Ultimate Team. Oh and Mass Effect 3 drops in two months! Going to preorder an N7 Collector's Edition for 360 soon. I'm so pumped for this game I started reading the latest novel, Mass Effect Retribution this week. I like reading each one before the next game comes out to line up with the story timeline. If you're into the games and haven't read the books, give them a try, I doubt you'll regret it, some great background and extra info on the characters and universe.

Not much else to talk about; NFL Wild Card weekend is here (with my Eagles now in the off-season). My picks are Cincinnati over Houston, New Orleans over Detroit, Atlanta over NYG, and Pittsburgh to beat Denver. Now, off to Heavy Rain.
