Description: 10 cm long, 4 to 6 cm high; white, often with black stains from iron sulfates in the mud; oval and oblong, with heavy, thick valves and hinge; shell has concentric ridges formed by growth rings, tightly closed valves fit together in a pattern of grooves and teeth. Habitat: Found buried in sand or mud, especially in protected bays and estuaries near low tide lines. Natural History: It lies not far below the surface and filters organic materials in the water through its syphons. It is commonly harvested commercially for food. Its size for commercial use is five to seven centimeters. |
