Gbowee to speak at 148th Commencement

Leymah Gbowee, Nobel-Peace-Prize-winning peace and women's rights activist, will address the Class of 2012 at Vassar's 148th Commencement ceremony on May 20, College officials said Tuesday. Gbowee achieved international renown after founding and leading Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, an organization that was instrumental in ending years of civil war and political oppression in her homeland.

Bosnak delves into the unconscious

Robert Bosnak—author, analyst and renowned teacher of dream-work—presented a lecture entitled "A Depth of Creative Imagination: Dreaming, Consciousness and Reality" on Thursday, Jan. 26. It was sponsored by the Carolyn Grant '36 Endowment.

Last Thursday, 102nd District Assemblyman Joel Miller announced his retirement from the New York State Assembly after 18 years in office. The Republican is known for being an independent thinker, a maverick and a reformer by friends, colleagues and political adversaries alike.

Advised by CDRC, ACDC effects changes to improve student dining

Anyone who has visited the All Campus Dining Center (ACDC) since the beginning of the semester has undoubtedly noticed that it is operating differently from last semester. In fact, the cafeteria now boasts several self-service stations, accurate nutritional information cards and a piece-by-piece servery layout in an effort to improve its food, organization and atmosphere.

VSA announces young trustee position

At the most recent Vassar Student Association (VSA) meeting on Sunday, Jan. 29, VSA President Tanay Tatum '12 announced that the VSA was preparing to propose that Vassar College's Board of Trustees include a young trustee position, which would allow recent graduates to have a chance to share their perspective as students with the Board.

Former VC employee sentenced to 12 years

On Thursday, Jan. 12, a Duchess County Court sentenced former Vassar construction manager Arthur Fisher to four to 12 years in a state prison for embezzling more than $2 million from the College. His wife, Jennifer Fisher, will also serve prison time.

West's lecture focussed on a variety of contemporary issues and philosophical topics, including introspection, social justice and confronting death. His lecture, entitled "The End of Oligarchy: On Spirituality, Citizenship and the New Democracy," discussed a variety of contemporary issues and philosophical topics.

Begemann selected as new DoPAA

New dean to start Jan. 1

On Dec. 1, President of the College Catharine Bond Hill announced in an all-campus email that Associate Professor of Chemistry and Associate Dean of the Faculty Marianne Begemann '79 had agreed to become Vassar's second Dean of Planning and Academic Affairs.

Vassar has formed a joint administrative and student working group to address how Vassar can improve itself by meeting state and federal Title IX standards, and move beyond them.

Last Wednesday, City of Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik was re-elected for his second term in an extremely close electoral race in which over 5000 votes were cast.

VSA votes on clause against discrimination

At the Vassar Student Association (VSA) Council meeting on Nov. 27, Vice President for Operations Jenna Konstantine '13 presented a revised, much-expanded non-discrimination clause for the VSA Constitution. The Council will vote on the new language at its next meeting on Dec. 4.

Acclaimed author and former Harvard University professor Ezra Vogel gave a lecture on Tuesday night on his newly released book, Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China—a biography on the leader of the Chinese Communist Party.

In response to a shortage of space available for student use on campus, the Vassar Student Association (VSA) and the College administration are beginning to consider ways to rectify the issue. Student leaders and college officials involved in campus planning are particularly interested in adapting the space now occupied by the Bookstore.
