VIZ on FUN Channel – Yes, you heard right

FUNimation Channel

It’s been an exciting weekend with all the new developments, but it’s not over yet. And you complained about showing old re-runs on the FUNimation Channel. For shame… Here’s an except from the press release.

The FUNimation® Channel, the premiere anime network from FUNimation Entertainment and OlympuSAT, is adding five new animated series from VIZ Media, LLC to debut throughout late Spring and summer line-ups. Titles include “NANA”, “HONEY AND CLOVER”, “MONSTER”, “BUSO RENKIN” and “HUNTER X HUNTER.”

Good news?  We think so.  A nice melting pot of anime, in my opinion.  I’d like to give a shout out to VIZ for their partnership and OlympuSAT for working so hard on the channel.  I know you guys are going to be asking, “Will you get <insert other VIZ show here>?”  The truth is I don’t know yet.  It’s an exciting time and you’re a part of it.  Lets take a moment to take it all in.

This is big, would be bigger if people outside of 5 markets had the channel, but can lead to good things, and I see Monster there too.

FINALLY Viz is coming out with Nana. When I move this summer, I’ll have to try to make sure the new place’s cable package has the FUNimation Channel.

    Kayla on says:

That is awesome, but how about you guys try to talk DishNetwork into getting the Funimation Channel, it shouldn’t to hard to get since they already have one channel that I know of from OlypuSat.

But atleast this lets me know that Viz will be realeasing the DVDS for Nana AND Honey and Clover, so I am happy about that.

Also I would like to announce.

Funimation + Viz = Ultimate tag team.

    Elfen Noir on says:

Yeah, would be great news personally if only my DishNetwork would provide me with the Funimation Channel :(
I’ve even gone to their site and filled in their request a channel form, but nothing happening in that department. Like Kayla said, at least that means I can purchase Honey and Clover eventually on dvds though, been waiting what seems forever for that :)

    Prede on says:

OMG “NANA”, “HONEY AND CLOVER”, “MONSTER”, those are three top tier series!!! I really want to check out all three of those, and buy them on DVD! I’m dieing to see those shows! This is frontline news! I only wish I had your channel! You guys are tempting me to change cable subscritpions to Verizon FiOS to just watch these shows. Sadly I can’t do that :( . I really wish you guys would get your channel on Comcast and other providers.

Will those shows be on your On Demand channel? Because I’ve been seeing Funimation shows from your on demand channel (Beck, Aquarion ) showing up on comcasts Anime Selects on demand channel. It be cool if I could watch these shows that way.

    Tyrenol on says:

Let’s see… If FUNi combines with Viz, would it be half the US anime market or 2/3rds?

Seriously, Rojas. Your company needs to license and release some uncensored and English-dubbed adult anime like Media Blasters is doing via Kitty Media. “Complete that circle.”

    Richard J. on says:

I just wish I had access to your channel. Great to see Funimation uniting with another company to add more content to it. (Hmm, any chance you could just take VIZ over?)

Is there any chance I could get the Funimation Channel on DishNetwork or DirectTV? Ever since Cartoon Network (CN) started doing nothing but their own original shows, I don’t have any all-animation channels to watch and it sucks. Having the Funimation channel would be awesome.

Hope all of these partnerships and announcements mean Funimation is reaping major profits this year! I can’t stand the thought that anything would happen to my favorite company!

Now, if only you’d elevate yourselves to godhood in my eyes by licensing Hell Girl seasons 2 and 3, Strike Witches and, for good measure, getting Ikkitousen: Dragon Destiny away from MB and licensing Great Guardians! (Not that I’m not salivating over your current licenses but. . . .)

I agree with Richard J about lcensing Hell Girl 2, but skip on Strike Witches and go for Bokurano instead. :P

YES!!!!!!!! One step closer! Now Bandai and (ADV >_>) needs to join! This is epic. I am still holding on to that all anime channel on basic TV this is just one step closer!!!

    Richard J. on says:

mario1×7, if it gets ADV to dub those recent sub-only releases, I’d say partner up. (Otherwise, I hope Funimation buys ADV out eventually. No, I’m not a forgiving man.)

Hey, will any of these VIZ shows be available on the video portal? Since I can’t get Funimation Channel, I’d take the next best thing easy!

Richard are you talking about the greatest anime ever created! Clannad! I hate ADV for what they have done to me… Clannad should have been Dubbed!! its the best show EVER!!!! wait wait wait I better not start on that ill get Mad, Sad, and ill hate ADV even more. but yea all anime Channel on basic TV accessible to everyone and I beat DVD sale will rise TV version and DVD versions. FUNimation and Viz are together now (Somewhat) and ADV, Bandai and who ever else there is should join in it could happen I can see it! And then after ADV dubs Clannad and release there DVD’s DUMP THEM and then say it was a business decision, bandai brought it up! ha ha ^_^ (Just kiddin I’ m stupid ha ha ha). but any can see this happening one day just keep thinking positive. and I really was just joking bout that ADV thing I hate them but I hate betrayal even more. *Whispers* (Even though they betrayed the Clannad fans first.)

    Prede on says:

chrisc1978: CPM anime could go there too ;) .CPM has a lot of great shows that need some love. We really do need an all anime network. I hope this channel gets picked up by other cable providers.

And guys stop the ADV bashing :( . I’m a dub fan who wanted to see Clannad, but even I’m tired of it now. Don’t forget about all the great stuff that they did for us fans in the past.

  • 17
    Mitamaking on says:

ADV has an anime channel, and it is in a hell lot more of homes than Funi’s channel. So why would ADV put there stuff on a channel with less viewers?

As for not dubbing Clannad, if you loved it so much that means you saw it fansubbed, so you shouldn’t care about it anyway because the sub is why you think it is the best show ever.

If Funi had this with my provider(COX) then I might care more.

  • 18
    chrisc1978 on says:

Prede: I forgot about CPM, are they even distributing their animes anymore? Someday I think even anime studios in Japan should Simulcast on the all anime channel.

Sorry Dude but Clannad is my Biggest anime I even prefer watching Clannad over well anything even though I seen it (Both seasons) I really wanted to own it dubbed even if the dub was bad I would have excepted it. I admit I Downloaded Clannad through torrent from Eclipse and watched it I still have it on my computer both season. I wanted to Own the DVD with a dub yea I bought the subtitle only DVD I watched it and the Subtitles were not half as good as Eclipse. I can’t forgive them unless they announce a dub for Clannad and Clannad the ~After Story~ I would swallow everything I have said about them and I have said alot!

FUNimation I love you but if you guys ever betray me the way ADV did its over I know you guys are the biggest anime company in America ill just give up on dub and download until I die. I trust you guys alot you have alot of good stuff and you talk with your fans I love that in a company, keep up the good work! and Viz there awesome to they have Naruto Shippuuden ^_^.

Maybe Bandai will take a hint and jump in…Word just broke that they have canceled the AL sets for FLAG and Zegapain and pushed back Gundam 00 part 1 as well as Wolf’s Rain, and Gundam Seed Destiny part 2 as well. Let’s hope we don’t have to go without their shows for a while like we did for Geneon. The studios coming together is what needs to happen to maintain and grow the R1 market in these tough tough times.

This is super, super awesome news. I am so excited. Was super happy to hear earlier this month about NANAs dvd release, but to now hear that H&C and Monster will be readily available for me to watch soon makes me a super happy camper. I hope this also means that their dvds will be released by the end of this year as well! I’ve been waiting for Viz to budge on these titles and I’m happy to see them make a move!

Thanks Funi and Viz for making this deal! Hopefully some of Viz’s other red headed step children will see the light of day on the Funi Channel (Prince of Tennis, Eyeshield 21, Hikari no Go, etc.)!

This and the news of FMA2, this week has been pretty fricking awesome :) .

Team up with Bandai and ADV and then rename the channel to “The Anime Channel” (Or Toonami, if you want a familiar name and want to license it), and you’ll have the ultimate anime channel evar.

    Richard J. on says:

@ Prede: the “in the past” part is why I can’t let it go. In my case, I’ve never seen any of the series they recently released sub-only, Clannad was on my list because of AIR and Kanon love, Princess Resurrection because I like the manga (though I heard bad things about the anime) and the Indian Summer because I like fanservice. In the end, I’m fansub-free on all and guitless about not buying them but it irks me to no end that a product I wanted to buy didn’t come out because, supposedly, ADV asked fans and decided this was what they wanted.

The way I see it, they decided to drop me. And where are the new license announcements from them? They and Bandai are having visible troubles but Funimation keeps going seemingly strong. Sure the switch to box sets is a tad annoying since it’s largely meant an end to high-quality LEs but at least they’re still providing my favorite feature, the English dub.

From the beginning Funimation seems to have had the best overall business model and despite CONSTANT complaining on forums about how they dub music or how their video quality is so bad or how they licensed another Gonzo show or whatever, they’re clearly doing fantastic. And not by dropping dubs, which seems to the first resort of the other companies.

Aw, I’m just going more off-topic, sorry. The good news should really take the focus.

    Tratious on says:

i still wish you guys had the BLEACH license you guys are awesome at releasing stuff, and you got some releases for you channel kudos to you!

    Prede on says:

chrisc1978: Well CPM hasn’t put a DVD out since 2007, but they have been showing some signs of life (if you read my blog, I write about that *shameless plug *link is in my name*), and their shows have been airing on Sci-Fi channel and Comcast’s Anime Selects VOD, so they are still trying to get anime out there. They have plans to re-release some of their older stuff, I hope that goes through. People have been calling them dead in the water for soem time though…let’s hope not.

Mitamaking: I just said the EXACT same thing on AoD forums. ADV’s Anime Network is in more homes (and has more viewers), so this is an odd choice. But let’s see how it works out.

Richard J: You do understand that they are really not in the best of shapes right now. After losing a few years of titles and their finacial support, and then Best Buy dumping anime like a hot potato, you then expect them to dub a bunch of stuff and lose money? Look I wanted Clannad dubbed, because I’m a dub only kinda guy (please don’t stone me), but ADV has to do, what they have to do to survive. We shouldn’t forget about all the epic dubs they;ve made in the past, and all the great work they’ve done. I LOVE funimation, I’m glad they are doing well, and that their current business model is working. I’m on your side on thsi dude. I’m just saying we don’t need to get mad at ADV here. Just write off Clannad as a loss :( and move on. No need to hate on ADV for 3 new series being dub only here. They’ve done so much more for us in the past.

    @Prede@

Oh My God Dude you have NO!!!! clue what you are saying! To right off Clannad would be the biggest mistake of your life. When I say Clannad is the greatest anime ever I am not saying it just because I like I say it because its FACT! Clannad is a high profiled anime and if ADV couldn’t dub it they should not have Licensed it… I really wanted Clannad to be dubbed I was looking forward to that more than anything this year. Then it felt like I kicked in the balls with steal toe boots when they said subbed only it really hurt me. If you haven’t watched Clannad i swear you are missing something really epic! Clannad and Clannad the ~After Story~ 47 Episodes of epicness. and ADV ruined it for most people, because most people won’t buy a Sub only DVD. I am just hoping they don’t get nothing else epic like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei or Toradora! those are my 2nd and 4th favorite. (i’ll bet they’ll get it >_> That would Leave me in Despair!)

    @Richard J@
Dude those Half season sets are epic! singles are to expensive and box sets take to long. The last Volume of Lucky Star just came out and i bet the box set will be released in 2011 >_>. I want Darker than black but that’s in singles I gotta wait. Half season and Complete box sets for the win. and when FUNimation dubs the opening songs in anime I love it I want them to dub the My Bride is a Mermaid (Seto No whatever) opening and all of the music in between. And I have been reading news Gonzo is not gonna last much longer after this spring its over. So FUNImation can finally get some epic anime!

  • 29
    Mitamaking on says:

@Mario I love dubs I really do, but no dub would do justice to Zetsubou, so why waste the money, I would actually buy a sub-only Zetsubou set, as for Clannad, I wish it had a dub but you not buying it just proves you don’t really like it as much as you claim.

  • 30
    1400_alucard on says:

Funimation and ADV should merge Funimation Channel & Anime Network together to reach more homes and to become the biggest anime channel in North America. If bigger corporations can own a channel/network together Funimation & ADV should be able to merge their channels together to reach more homes and show anime companies can work together like larger corporations.

  • 31
    Prede on says:

mario1×7: It may be the best anime since sliced bread but that doesn’t change the fact that I wasn’t talking to you I was talking to Richard J. It also doesn’t change the fact that ADV didn’t really have the money to support a dub, and no one else seemed interesting in licensing Clannad. Besides to say that some show is the “best anime ever” , and it’s a fact, makes no sense. It’s really an opinion. It could be an educated one, but it’s still an opinion.

  • 32
    mario1x7 on says:

I do own the Clannad sub only. I couldn’t help it. Nagisa’s face was like *Buy me* so I caved. but I only seen one episode of ADV sub and its crap. SS-Eclipse is 100 times better. I thought I said this before?

And yes Dubbing Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei would be a hard. matching the perfectness of the Japanese Voice actor but I think the Zetsubou girls can be matched easily but Zetsubou Sensei himself will be a challenge. and translating all the background text would be hell but I still want it dubbed even if its bad. and when ever it does get licensed his epic trade make line MUST STAY. example: I am in Despair the overseas Class has left me in Despair!< It muct be said like that no other way. I will also except if the English voice actor said Zetsuboushita!…..

  • 33
    Mitamaking on says:

That type of dub Mario would have no appeal to non-otakus and then it would be a waste to do, the point of a dub is to bring in more people, a dub where they keep lines like that would push people away making the dub pointless.

I will give you buying Clannad a nod, good job, I know ADV’s subs aren’t exactly great right now(have you seen Indian Summer’s ewww) but once again buying Clannad now was an investment into a second set being made and After Story being released by them.

Seriously I don’t think Funi wants the Key titles otherwise they would have had Clannad a while back.

  • 34
    mario1x7 on says:

    @Prede@

I don’t care who you were talking to. I am saying don’t right off Clannad because some Failure of a company licensed it when they shouldn’t have.
If ADV wouldn’t have gotten Clannad I am 100% sure someone would have picked it up easily ADV just got in the way. and I am saying Clannad is the best anime ever because it is. If you’d watched then I have no doubt you would agree with me. the people that have watched it which are alot of people say its the best anime ever if you don’t think Clannad is the best anime ever you haven’t seen it.

  • 35
    mario1x7 on says:

    @Mitamaking@

I don’t think Clannad fits with FUNimation I think Clannad is more Bandai/ADV. but ADV has failed me. but they said if Clannad was popular then they would dub it, and from what I have heard Clannad is sold out everywhere and people are complaining to ADV to this second there is still a chance.

Dude if Zetsubou Sensei is done right if they can hire a good enough voice actor one that’s really good. Zetsubou Sensei can be emulated. and all the girls and support charters should be easy.

    Tyrenol on says:

I was there a long time ago when the competition between US anime companies was healthy. We had a wide variety of titles coming from US Renditions -> ADV, Pioneer, Media Blasters, US Manga (CPM), Bandai, Streamline, and several rinky-dinks.

And then two things happened: 1) NuTech (an h-anime distributor) had the cold-blooded nerve to post h-anime for downloading without full approval from the original creators. And 2) Pioneer -> Geneon and ADV were churning out more otaku-oriented shows.

I’m telling you, folks. If FUNi didn’t make good of the power it sucked from ADV when it did, the anime industry in the US would’ve gone the way of Mervyns and KB Toys. And, of course, my old arguments.

And I’m glad for FUNi trying to draw in more people with “free anime.” But I prefer doing it the old fashion way: buying (with money I don’t have much of) English-dubbed DVDs of shows I actually like.

    Last I heard, mind you.

I THINK THAT FUNAMATION SHOULD CONTINUE DRAGONBALL GT OR START DRAGONBALL AF BECAUSE THERE ARE ALOT OF FANS OUT THERE THAT LOVE DRAGONBALL. IF THEY CONTINUED IT THEY WOULD MAKE ALOT OF MONEY$$$$$$$,AND IF THEY DONT WANT TO START A NEW SERIES THEY SHOULD AT LEAST MAKE A COUPLE OF MOVIES FOR THE PEOPLE WHO REALLY ENJOY THE SHOW AND THE SPECIALS AND THE MOVIES. LIKE THE LAST MOVIE: A HEROES LEGACY. THEY SAID THAT ALLL OF THE Z FIGHTERS DIED THEY DON’T EVEN TELL YOU HOW THEY DIED PLUS THE SAYINS ARE SUPOSED TO LIVE FOR A LONG TIME.SO THEY SHOULD CONTINUE SOMETHING SO WE KNOW HOW THE Z FIGHTERS DIED. AND IF POSSIBLE THEY SHOULD MAKE A MOVIE WERE THERE IS A NEW GUIRDIAN OF EARTH AND HE CREATS REALLY POWERFULL DRAGON BALLS WICH HAVE NO LIMIT TO THE WISHES AND THEN GOKU JR. AND PAN AND PUCK GO OUT TO FIND THEM AND GOKU JR. WISHES HIS ANCESTORS BACK TO LIFE. THEY SHOULD MAKE A MOVIE LIKE THAT OR SOMETHING. I HOPE THAT EVREYONE READS THIS INCLUDING THE FUNIMATION AND TOEI PEOPLE I HOPE IT GIVES THEM AN IDEA OF A NEW MOVIE CAUSE THERE ARE ALOT OF DB , DBZ AND DBGT FANS OUT THERE AND THEY WOULD ALL ENJOY A NEW MOVIE OR SERIES.

@lilly, blazinanime, mangafox, and onemanga are not sites you should talk about on an official blog post from funimation. It’s insulting that you think funi’s effort to give everyone a legal way to watch their stuff is pointless. If you’re going to go watch your stuff there fine, but don’t tell other people to do the same, especially on blog.funimation.com. It’s a huge slap in the face to funi.
