Welcome to the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Employment and Volunteer Opportunities page. There are many roles behind the scenes at an art museum, as well as a broad range of career opportunities—whether support or professional, seasonal or year-round, part-time or full-time, volunteer or salaried. Some departments and positions require highly specialized education and experience, while others seek individuals with more broad-based or skills-related backgrounds.

Information About Museum Careers

Though a foundation in art or art history is helpful, it is not required for every position in an art museum. However, curatorial positions do demand completion of a graduate degree at minimum, and the heightened focus and expertise gained through doctoral study is often preferred.

Departments in which defined skills and knowledge are necessary, but do not require a formal background in art history, include: construction, installations, finance, information services, audio-visual services, administrative services, admissions, and inventory control and distribution for retail operations.
