Why has the website's design and layout changed?

The re-branding to irishtimes.com and the removal of Premium Content has provided an opportunity to refresh the design and layout of the website. The new categorisations, which reflect the nature of the integrated newsroom, are intended to display the variety, depth and relevance of our content.

How has the site navigation changed?

The navigation presents a simple site structure, so that news and information is divided into clear content areas. The primary horizontal navigation bar contains links to the top-level sections of the site and is available on every page.

I cannot find an area of the site on the new design.

What is included in my subscription to The Irish Times Archive?

A subscription to The Irish Times Archive gives you access to the searchable archive of articles dating back to 1859, the first year of publication. The last 12 months of archives are free to access.

The archive contains both a digital version of the newspaper back to 1859 and a text version of articles back to 1996. There is a week's delay from publication in the digital version being uploaded to the archive.

Please note that the digital archive is designed for broadband usage and may not function properly if you are using a modem. We suggest a connection speed of at least 512 kbit/s.

How do I access the archive after subscribing?

When registering for a weekly, monthly or annual subscription, you will be asked to choose a username and password to access the archive. If you subscribe to a 24 hour subscription, a ten digit access code will be sent to you, which you will be prompted for when you access the archive.

You will be able to log in from any computer connected to the Internet. It is not possible to log in simultaneously at different computers.

When will my subscription start and finish?

An annual subscription is valid for one year (365 days) from the date of subscription. A monthly subscription is valid for 30 days from purchase and weekly subscription is valid for 7 days from and including the date of subscription. A 24 hour subscription is valid for 24 hours from the time you first enter the access code on irishtimes.com.

Will I be reminded before my subscription expires?

You will be reminded with emails and/or messages at login when your account is due for renewal. These reminders will include links to the renewal area in 'my account'. If you have purchased an annual auto-renewing subscription you will receive emails before a renewal payment is processed. You will not be reminded of expiry if you have purchased a 24 hour subscription.

How do I find the information I require in the archive?

There are three ways in which to find information in the archive:

  • Search: Type one or more search terms (the words or phrase that best describe the article you want to find) into the search box of either the digital or text archive. Then select other search parameters (e.g. date range) and click search.
  • Browse: You can browse the digital archive by date by clicking on browse in the top navigation bar in the archive.
  • Timeline: In the digital archive a historical timeline of significant events in history is accessible from the top navigation bar of the archive.

How do I use the search function?

Type one or more search terms (the words or phrase that best describe the publication you want to find) into the search box, select other search parameters (e.g. date range), and click search. The digital archive is not case sensitive. Start with the basic search term that you are looking for. If you are looking for general information on the moon, try the word moon first. It is advisable to use specific search terms to refine your query; if you require specific information on the moon landing, enter the search moon landing. To restrict a search further, include more terms, e.g. Apollo 11 moon landing. The digital archive has been created from original copies of the newspaper, and you may find the age of the newspaper and quality of the originals may affect the search-ability and results. By default, the archive returns pages that include all of your search terms. There is no need to include "and" between terms.

Below is an overview of features that may assist you in your search:

  • Phrase Searching: The use of quotation marks ( " ) finds documents containing the exact phrase entered in quotation marks. To specify something as a phrase, enclose it in double quotes (for example "George Bernard Shaw").
  • Search Weighting: If you wish, you can give a higher weighting to more important words by placing a plus (+) sign in front of them. Similarly, less desired terms are preceded by a minus (-) sign; you can use the minus sign to remove all or most items containing a specific word. For example, to search for documents about manchester united but not about champions you would specify the following search string: +manchester +united -champions.
  • Sorting Options: You can choose how you would like the results of your query to be displayed; by the closest match, newest or oldest articles.
  • Refine Options: Your search results can be refined by newspaper/website section, date or by inserting additional words into the relevant field(s). You can also choose to exclude a section from the results. These options are available on the right hand side of the page.

Why can't I find information on a person in the archive?

The terms that are used in the modern day may differ from the terms that were used at the time that an article in the past was published. Historically there was a tendency to describe people more formally or by their formal title, e.g. Mr Yeats instead of W.B. Yeats, or President Kennedy rather than John F. Kennedy. If the surname you are searching for is common try searching various versions of a name or try to searching for the full name in quotes, which will find documents containing the exact phrase entered in quotation marks, e.g. "John Murphy";. If the surname is unusual, try to search by the surname alone.

Why can't I find an event in the archive?

The names by which some events are commonly known may be different to when they were first reported. For example, the First World War has been referred to the Great War, or the 1916 Rising has been reported as the Rebellion. Try to search using words that describe the event or that may have been used in reports. It may be useful to check other historical sources.

Please note that some spellings have also changed over time.

I can't find the event on the date it happened.

Before the days of the telegraph and telephone, events were reported days or weeks after they took place because of the time taken for news to reach the newspaper.

I cannot locate a birth, marriage, or death notice in the historical articles.

In historical birth and death notices women were called by their husband's name e.g. Mrs John Murphy or Mrs Murphy. Children might not have been named in some birth notices, e.g. 'To Mrs Murphy a son'. The notice may have been published in a newspaper other than The Irish Times.

Are other sites charging for archive content areas of their sites?

The decision to charge for The Irish Times Archive is part of a growing trend amongst content-driven websites all over the world to introduce subscription models for archived premium services. Numerous other websites, including The New York Times, the Financial Times and the Los Angeles Times, now charge for access to online content.

What are the subcription rates?

An annual subscription costs €395, while weekly or monthly subscriptions cost €26 and €65 respectively. A 24 hour subscription costs €10.

What parts of the archive are free to access?

The last 12 months of archives are free to access. A subscription to The Irish Times Archive gives you access to the archive of articles dating back to 1859, the first year of publication.

You may conduct searches of the subscription areas of the archive for free and view abstracts of the articles listed. However, to read the full content of the article, subscription is required. For research purposes or one-off requirements the most suitable options are a 7 day subscription or a 24 hour subscription.

You can also help us to improve our spam protection system by reporting messages as spam using the 'this is spam' button. This will send a copy of the message to the support team and will delete the message from your mailbox. If you use an external email client, such as Outlook, then please forward the email to abuse@irishtimes.com and remember to include the full headers.

Additionally, please ensure that you know what you are agreeing to when filling in any online forms (e.g. payments, questionnaires, competitions etc). If you "publish" your email address on any site that does not guarantee your privacy, the address may find its way on to any sort of marketing list, including those of offensive spammers. Please be careful about posting your email address in messages to online forums or newsgroups. Again, even with controlled access to a supposedly secure online environment, any forum where others can view your address makes it vulnerable as a potential spam target. Never respond to offers to be removed from mailing lists that you have not signed up for. If you are using Outlook open the email message in question and go to view, then options. Select all of the text in the 'internet headers' area and copy the text. Then paste the text into a new message and send it as you would normally.

The anti-spam filter can be found by clicking on the link on the left hand-side navigation bar in your email account. The filter sensitivity level allows you to set the sensitivity level when filtering incoming emails. The sensitivity of the system varies from off, to low (default), to high, to strictly accepting only messages from email addresses specified in your white/safe lists. The block list is a list of email addresses or domain names from which you don't wish to receive email.

You can set how often you want your junk mail to be automatically deleted by clicking on the junk mail deletion link on the anti-spam page.

The anti-spam filter is a folder where messages designated as junk mail are sent. This allows you to go through your list of filtered messages to check if valid messages have been mistaken for spam and quarantined. Using the various message handling options, you may choose what you want to do with the filtered message(s).

Can I sort my mail in a different way?

You can sort your mail by sender, subject, date or size. Simply click on one of these headings and your mail will re-sort accordingly. Click twice to sort the mail in the opposite direction (e.g. starting from earliest date, or latest date).

Why did I not receive a read receipt?

Some mail clients do not recognise read receipts. Also, depending on the mail client, message recipients can choose not to send read receipts, even when they are requested.

What is POP3 or IMAP access?

An account with POP3 or IMAP access allows you to access mail through an external e-mail client such as Outlook, Eudora, or Netscape Mail. In simpler terms you can download and read your emails via Outlook Express or other similar e-mail software packages.

You can use either mechanism to read your email but one mechanism (POP3) downloads your e-mails to your PC, whilst the other (IMAP) leaves your email on the irishtimes.com server and makes a copy to your email client. You should only use one of these two mechanisms to access your emails.

In your email client configuration settings under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' settings ensure that 'My server requires authentication' is selected. Then select 'Logon Using' and insert the account/user name: 'username@irishtimes.com'.

How can I archive my messages from my account?

You can download and save all your email messages to another location by using either POP3 or IMAP connectivity.

Are there any space limits on sending or receiving emails?

Yes, your overall space for storing received emails, including all folders in your account, is limited to 100MB. Futhermore, each email, whether it is being sent or received, can be no more than 4mb in size.

What is the desktop email alert?

The desktop email alert is an icon, which, once activated, sits in the bottom right corner of your screen in the taskbar system tray. It informs you of the arrival of new messages into your mailbox even if you are not logged on to your email account. Double-clicking on the icon will launch a web browser and take you to the login page where you can log in to check your mail. Please note you must be connected to the Internet in order for the desktop email alert to function.

How do I activate the desktop email alert?

Simply click on the "desktop email" link on your email account login page. The download involves a few easy steps, just click OK and agree to the conditions as set out in the licence agreement and the feature will be downloaded in a few moments

How does the desktop email alert let me know when I have new messages?

The desktop email alert either flashes an envelope in your system tray, or a window pops up to let you know that you have new mail. You can choose how you would like to be notified by setting your preferences. To do so, right-click the desktop email alert icon and select "preferences...", then either check or uncheck the "display pop-up window when new mail arrives" checkbox. The envelope will stop flashing after you have read your mail.

How does the address book work?

The address book allows you to store all your contact information in one place. You can create personal or group contacts, and maintain distribution lists for mailing to multiple recipients. The address book also has an import/export function, and contact details may be transferred between your account and external mail clients such as Microsoft Outlook.

How does the import/export feature work?

To import contact details from other sources such as Microsoft Outlook, you must first save the contacts as CSV (Comma Separated Values) files or LDIF files. For more details on this, please refer to the help feature for these products, or contact their help desk. After you have saved the file in this format, click on the import/export link in the irishtimes.com address book and use the "browse" button to locate the required file. Click the "import" button. All the contacts in the file will be imported to your personal address book.

To export the contact details, choose the type of format you wish to export the details in and click "export". You will then be prompted to open the new file, or save it to your computer. There are a number of possible reasons, the following being the most likely:

This issue may be caused by our account security system. If the time or date set in your computer is "later" than your local time, the system believes that you have been logged in for an excessive period and automatically logs you out. This security feature is designed to ensure that an unattended account does not remain indefinitely active, potentially allowing unauthorised access to the account. Please check the time and date settings on your computer and correct them if necessary.

Your browser may be storing an old version of the email page. This is called 'caching'. Please follow the instructions below on how to delete your browser's cache to see if this will resolve the problem. Please choose your internet browser version and follow the instructions. How will I receive my issues?

The ePaper is available to view online at www.irishtimes.com/epaper or offline by using the PressReader, which is also available at the same address. Viewing the ePaper online requires no additional software and it is compatible with Windows and Macintosh systems. To install the PressReader for offline reading or to download the newspaper after the PressReader has been installed, please click on disk icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the page.

What is the PressReader?

The PressReader is a platform for offline reading. The PressReader allows you to download publications to up to three computers. To install the PressReader, please click on the disk icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the page.

Two system requirements for PressReader installation are:

  • Your computer operating system must be Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

What size is the PressReader download?

The PressReader download size is 9MB. We recommend a Broadband Internet Connection of at least 128 kbps to download the PressReader.

To search for a word(s) in the newspaper click enter your search query into the search field at the top of the screen. At present it is not possible to perform a search in the PressReader.

Can I print the ePaper?

Yes, you can print the publication using the print icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

Yes, with our ePaper app you can read The Irish Times in true printed format, enhanced with the latest digital tools. Link to your existing ePaper account to download the paper. Available for the iPhone and iPad on the App Store for free.

What subscriptions are available?

We offer varying subscription options, including a single copy for €1.90 and an annual subscription for €160. The frontpage of the most recent issues is available without registration/subscription. Payments are automatically renewed upon expiry (with the exception of one-week and single/back copy purchases).

How do I check my account payment status?

What is the Photo Sales service?

The Irish Times Photo Sales service provides printed copies of photographs taken by Irish Times photographers. The online photo archive allows you to browse or search over 220,000 images. Over 100 new photos are added each week. The images date back to September 2001 and a substantial number published before that date are also available. The archive also contains a selection of unpublished images.

Images from wire services (e.g. Reuters, Getty), freelance photographers, or privately-owned photos are not available with the photo sales service. If you require such an image, please contact us as we may be able to provide you with source contact details.

How many photographs are included on the site?

Over 220,000 Irish Times photographs are available and the number available increases on a daily basis.

Are today's photos online?

The photos from each day's paper are uploaded each morning and are available through the Latest Newspaper Images section.

No, the logo in the bottom left-hand side of each image will not feature on the photo you receive. This is an electronic copyright watermark which is only present online.

How do I order a photo?

To see a larger version of a photo, please click on the image. To order a photo, click the 'add to basket' button and choose the size and amount you wish to order. Your basket contents will be displayed and you will see a thumbnail of the picture to confirm that you are ordering the right one. You may continue to shop or proceed to the checkout. When you wish to pay click on basket / checkout and proceed to the payment pages.

Do I need to register to purchase a photo?

Yes, to purchase a photo you are required to register your details, including postal address, which will be used for delivery.

What do I receive when I purchase a photo?

The photos are of high quality resolution and have a gloss finish. Please note that the thumbnail images online are of a lesser quality than the developed photograph.
