Kings Hire Clifford Ray To Work With Big Men

In an interesting bit of news from Wednesday, Jason Jones of The Bee reports that the Kings have hired Clifford Ray, the center for the 1975 NBA Champion Golden State Warriors, to work with the team's big men. Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Truck Robinson had been in that role previously. Reef is now an assistant general manager with Sacramento, and Truck moved on last offseason.

Ray has long ties with Keith Smart from coaching in the Continental Basketball Association and with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He's also been an assistant with the Magic and Celtics, and worked with Dwight Howard in Orlando and Al Jefferson in Boston. J.J. Hickson "DeMarcus Cousins in Sacramento" is a nice addition to that list.

Most importantly, Ray once saved a dolphin's life by reaching down its throat to retrieve a large metal screw that the mereswine had swallowed.

He cut his fingernails, greased his arm, put on a pair of gloves, and reached down through the dolphin's mouth, grabbed the screw, and pulled it out.

This will come in handy the next time that Hassan Whiteside accidentally eats his playbook.

Was my favorite story line from that show

After awhile you could see the endings coming but that one surprised me. Thought the big ending was when George had to go in the ocean because he had been lying to his girlfriend about being a marine biologist.

Cute story, but if true

he wasted time cutting his nails if he put on gloves.
I hope he doesn’t teach wasted moves to our bigs.
aka I hear he is a great big man coach

When I attend the opening game in 2015 at the ElRonToro (or whatever) arena at the railyards I am wearing loose fitting pants so people can't see how happy I am to be there.

Here is the wikipedia version of the Flipper Fable

In 1978, Ray was in the news for an entirely different reason: he helped save a dolphin’s life. At Marine World (then located in Redwood City, California and now in Vallejo, California), during maintenance in the tank of a bottlenose dolphin named “Dr. Spock”, the dolphin swallowed a bolt with a protruding sharp screw. The veterinarian was unwilling to perform a risky operation while the screw was still in the dolphin’s first stomach, just inches beyond his reach. His frustrated suggestion that he needed longer arms led Marine World President Mike Demetrios, a big basketball fan, to ask local star Ray (whose arms are 3 feet 9 inches, or 114 centimeters, long) if he could help. With gloves, lubrication, and guidance, he was able to reach down Spock’s throat and retrieve the screw before it could cause more damage.12

Wonderful story.
