Heucheras: Grower Tips and Benefits

Heucheras are native to North America. Our carefully bred Heucheras are scientifically evaluated to ensure optimum growth throughout the various zones in the United States. We currently have 5 varieties of Heucheras, H. americana, H. villosa, H. micrantha, H. cylindrical, and H. sanguinea.

H. americana Heucheras can take extreme heat as well as extreme cold weather. H. villosa Heucheras grow in a variety of climates, especially in regions with high humidity. H. micrantha Heucheras are native to the west coast and embody ruffled and curled foliage to protect the plant during freezing winds in the winter. H. cylindrical Heucheras have compact wand flowers and habit which enable them to survive harsh temperatures and drying winds. Finally, H. sanguine Heucheras are extremely drought and heat tolerant, ideal for southwestern regions of the United States.

The combination of our Heuchera varieties ensures homeowners from all across the country can grow our plants. In this post, we will share our secrets of growing successful Heucheras.

  • First, select the right Terra Nova Nurseries’ Heuchera for your region.
  • Be sure to use well-drained, organic soilless media, pH between 5.8 and 6.2. Do not plant Heucheras in heavy soil.
  • Plant Heuchera crowns high and allow the soil to settle in. Burying the crown of the plug is the number one killer of Heucheras.
  • Use liquid feed at about 50 to 100 PPM.
  • Only use slow release sparingly, approximately 1# of N per cubic yard of soil.
  • Each microclimate of the country is different, so use local weather data accordingly.
  • Terra Nova Nurseries’ Heucheras are best grown in shallow bulb pots. Do not use automated planters without checking the plant depth.
  • Yellow and gold forms of Heucheras are used to brighten shady areas; therefore testing should be done under 30% shade.
  • Do not grow Heucheras like annuals!

Terra Nova Nurseries’ hardy Heucheras have great flowering habits, come in bright and exciting colors, boast shapely mounding habits, and bloom for months on end. Dan Heims on The Martha Stewart Show

Back by popular demand and based on a high number of web hits on Martha Stewart’s website, the episode featuring our very own Dan Heims re-aired on the Hallmark Channel July 20, 2011. The episode originally aired on March 18, 2011, featuring Dan as an expert guest on two segments. The first segment included a walk-around interview between Martha and Dan, during which he discussed plant breeding, discovery, and tissue culture. The second segment focused on Terra Nova Nurseries’ new plants for 2011. Click here for full details about the show and how Dan enlightened Martha and America about Heuchera and other plants.

OFA – A Horticulture Industry “Family” Affair

Another successful OFA has come and gone for Terra Nova Nurseries! Our team members “planted” themselves at our booth to mix, mingle and share new introduction information to our customers and others. A steady stream of traffic flowed through Terra Nova Nurseries’ booth, all wanting to learn about our newest plants.

This year, we showcased several of our top varieties. This group included popular Heucheras such as ‘Ginger Peach’, ‘Midnight Bayou’ and ‘Pear Crisp’ as well as our newest Heuchera, ‘Delta Dawn’. Show goers also got a glimpse of our new Heucherella ‘Solar Eclipse’ and Heucherella ‘SunriseFalls’. Our booth also featured a number of Echinacea plants, Sedums, Tiarella, and Nepta. Growers, if you liked any of the plants displayed at the show and wish to place an order, please visit our website for more information. Our site has a special section called, “How to Order” with various options you can use, click here to be directed to the appropriate page.

While Kristy Lucero-Roberson and Larry Finley manned the booth, Dan Heims, Ken Brown, Chuck Pavlich, and Scott Christy were coveted sources of information as they went from meeting to meeting. They met with existing customers as well established new relationships with representatives from many companies at the show. As folks working in the trade well know, OFA is a great place for relationship making, and with over 600 exhibitors and a sold out show, Terra Nova Nurseries was able to connect with not only national companies but also international companies. Stay tuned to our blog to learn about some of our newest 2011 and 2012 business initiatives and offers.

In addition to growers and retailers stopping by the booth, we topped off the show with visits from several high-profile editors in the horticulture industry. Editors from GIE Media, Scranton Gillette Communications, Meister Media, and Better Homes & Gardens stopped by to see our brand new plants. Thanks to all of the editors for their time and interest.

A special thanks to our friends in the industry; it was great to see all of you at the show. Also a big thanks to show attendees who visited our booth this year; we appreciate your support. Don’t forget to check out our new Facebook page, Flickr page and Twitter page to view more coverage from the show. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at OFA next year!
