Sweden update from the boss

Posted on: Tue 28 Jul 2009
Brendan your first game on tour went really well.
Yes, excellent. Most parts of our game were outstanding. Before the game we'd been told this team had never been beaten by a British club [in games against QPR, Southampton and Watford] so that was my team talk done! We were technically very good, you can see the progress in the group. We were strong technically and tactically. Our movement and intensity were good, as was our pressing of the ball. We had 36 shots on goal, 22 on target, and that was allied with controlling the game. It was very pleasing with some terrific goals.

Hal Robson-Kanu got himself a first half hat-trick.
Yes, and you can see with Hal that his movement is clever. What you need to have in your team are different types of players and he is what I would call a soloist. You need those, the guys who can make the difference in the game. That's his job, and that will be his job this season, to create and score goals. He did that very well.

Simon Church is really getting to grips with that front striker's role in a 4-3-3.
His movement is very good. What's exciting for the strikers is that once you play that role and in a team that passes it, like we did, it's a very enjoyable role. Sometimes when you play as a two you can make the same runs. With how we work, you need one person who can offer the depth and penetration in the game, which is the movement in behind and Simon's movement is outstanding. For a young player his intelligence is very good and you need that the higher you go. Scott Davies, playing just off him, his positioning was very good and you see with his goals for Aldershot that he can score in the League. He was impressive as well.

We will pay due respect to the level of the opposition, but we got everything we wanted from the game.
I gave the players objectives before the game and first & foremost we wanted physical conditioning, which we got as most players got 90 minutes. Tactically we wanted to grow our method of play, and clearly that was achieved. I wanted 12 shots on target and we got 22, which is great. We wanted no more than 4 shots against, and the total was 4 so that was good. We also wanted to control and dominate the game, which clearly we did.

What can you tell us about any knocks?
Jay Tabb was a human pinball machine again! He's really strong, he has the body of a rugby player. Kalifa Cisse took a knock on his shoulder and we will protect him. The idea was for most to play 90 minutes and same on Saturday.

Harper, Hunt and Bignall sat out, will they play out here?
We hope so. They've come out here to be part of the group but also to get minutes on the field.
