One of the area’s longest-running athletic events enters its 22nd year as the annual Record-Courier Portage County Open Tennis Tournament prepares for a week of competition scheduled for Monday, July 13 through Sunday, July 19. Since its inauguration in 1988, the tournament has offered tennis players of all ages and skill levels an opportunity to test their mettle against opponents having similar characteristics.

Tennis players who either live or work in Portage County, and their dependents, are eligible to participate in the tournament. Registration forms are being mailed this week, and also are available at both the Kent and Ravenna city parks & recreation offices, posted at various area tennis courts, and by downloading from www.kentparksandrecreation.org.

Ranging from Novice Youth players to tennis-teaching professionals competing in the Open Adult events, between 80 and 160 players gather at the Kent Roosevelt High School tennis courts for a week of camaraderie and competition. Among last year’s champions were first-time beginner Troy Losey and the tournament’s longstanding player-to-beat, Gary Richey. Family contributions also have become a staple, such as mother (and Kent Roosevelt tennis coach) Mary Lynn Bush and her children, Alyssa, Lauren and Michael; father and son Steve and Owen Baggett; and husband and wife Tom and Julie Euclide.

“The PC Open remains the best bargain of any tournament in the region,” said tournament director Kim Uhlik. “We’ve had only one fee increase (from $5 to $6), voted for by the players themselves, to acquire championship-quality tennis balls; we are grateful to our sponsors.”

In addition to title sponsor Record-Courier, administrative support from the Kent and Ravenna city parks & recreation departments, favorable pricing from Shayler Engraving, and Custom T-Shirts have contributed to the tournament’s affordability.
