Complete Descriptive List or Muster Roll of the Crew of the U.S. Gunboat "Commodore Morris" on the Thirty first day of March, 1864.

transcribed by Terry Foenander.

The following names and personal details of the enlisted men of the USS Commodore Morris has been transcribed from a copy of the Muster Roll dated March 31, 1864, the original of which is held at the National Archives. The actual Muster Rolls measure about two feet by two and a half feet and were filled out every quarter, although this was not always strictly adhered to. They included only the names of the enlisted men; the officers' lists were filled out on a separate form.

The National Archives is the repository for almost all the Muster Rolls and Lists of Officers of Union Navy vessels of the Civil War period.

The following list is arranged alphabetically, with details shown in the following order: sailor's name and rating, followed by date of enlistment, place enlisted, term of enlistment in years, place or vessel from which received, where born, age, occupation, color of eyes, color of hair, complexion, and remarks, if any. The details have been transcribed in full with the exception of the height of each sailor, left out as an unnecessary detail. In the transcription process, some errors in deciphering the handwritten rolls may have been made, however, every attempt has been made to keep this to a minimum. This particular Roll was signed by Acting Assistant Paymaster Edward H. Brink and countersigned by Lieutenant Commander Joseph P. Fyffe. There were almost a hundred crew members on the vessel at this time, with over a third of them being African Americans, most of whom would have been from the region around the Virginia tidewater.

The USS Commodore Morris was assigned to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, and spent the majority of her naval career cruising the rivers and creeks of eastern Virginia.
